I have a number of Austen ancestors buried at St Mary's, Shalford. If someone has a digital camera and wouldn't mind taking a pic of them and placing them on this site I would really appreciate it. There are some in the Church and in the churchyard. Many thanks.
-
I'll try and take a look for you in the next few days.

Thanks Twink. I appreciate it.

I really appreciate your assistance. You are so quick with your reply. The pics will certainly enhance my project. Are there any inside the Church? I have a pic of a hatchment of Frances A Bedford, my ggg Greatgrandmother. But I believe there are other cripts inside there somewhere.
Reggie.

Ok - here goes - there are lots of Austen tablets inside... so bear with me on this.

It is extracts from William Brays diary and mentions the Austen family. In particular Mr Austens death and funeral (November 3rd +)

Thanks Twink for all those pics. William Bray was apparently a close friend of the Austens. He is mentioned in Robert Austen's will.

Hello Twink,
Thank you very much for your generous contribution in posting the Shalford Memorials..
My interest lies with Frances Annesley GREGORY's ancestors.
Her mother Frances ALLEN was a sister of Robert ALLEN (died 1752) of Greenwich and Jane ALLEN (died 1807) of Croom Hill Greenwich.
Jane Allen held 2/3 of the manor of Curles near Clavering Essex.
Her will :
Description Will of Jane Allen, Spinster of Greenwich , Kent
Date 08 April 1807
Catalogue reference PROB 11/1458
Dept Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury
Series Prerogative Court of Canterbury and related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers
Piece Name of Register: Lushington Quire Numbers: 218 - 272
indicates thet she inherited from her brother Robert ALLEN who pre deceased her by many years.
My family history interests are centred on the East Herts, West Essex, S.W. Suffolk and South Cambridgeshire areas.
I am looking to find how and when the ALLENS came to hold the 2/3 manor.
An earlier holder was John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury.
My BARLEE family had extensive interests in the Clavering area from the 13th. century.
I am looking for Robert, Jane and Frances' parents names.
Are you able to help me?

Hello Nugget
I am not sure who you are directing the question to on this post. I am the initiator of the 'St Mary's Shalford' and Twink replied and did some wonderful photo shots for me.
If you need to know more about descendants of Frances Annesley Gregory you may wish to view my website at http://tyndale.rootschat.net
There isn't any detail of her ancestors (as yet) as I have been concentrating on the Bedford line.
If you reply to me please be aware that I may not respond in the next week as I will be away and will have limited access to my email.
Cheers

Hello Reggie,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your previous mail. I was expecting any reply to come from my own mailbox.
Thank you for your post. I will check your website as soon as I get this reply away.
Hope to be in touch when you return from your break.

For all thoise interested in Austen family history or indeed any memorials inside this Church - get in quick.
The current plan is to "modernise" the church to make it more "accessable and flexible", in other words they are planning to materially change the interior in order to rent out the space for parties, concerts etc. So the risk of some drunken teenager swilling booze over an Austen memorial is now a real possibility.
Don't be suprised if they are "removed for safe keeping".
I'm not sure if there are any plans to remove all the family memorials but I would not be suprised if they disappear over time.
So better get in and do your research now.
Sorry about this news but this is modern England, anything over ten years old seems to be targetted for destruction - Pol Pot would be proud.

What a shame. I thought Australia was the 'knock down' country. If this church wasn't standing I would not have been able to get those photographs which really helped support my research.
Thanks for the information.

AUSTEN family.
I am researching some old letters and have come across one written by Elizabeth Smith AUSTEN at Teignmouth, dated 10th September 1831.
It was sent to John Hopton FORBES, Ely Place, Holborn, London. Judging by the contents of the letter it is possible that FORBES was a solicitor acting on behalf of Miss AUSTEN.
I can transcribe this letter for anybody who is interested.

Hallo Reggie
You may know this, or it may not be relevant, but when I was growing up in Pirbright in the 1940s/1950s, the family living in Pirbright Manor were Godwin-Austens. Pirbright village is 6 miles the other side of Guildford from Shalford village, so not very far away. There is still a Godwin-Austen in the local phone book, living in Cranleigh.
I was told that the occasional cottage one sees with a lemon-shaped top to a window (I believe the architectural term is an ogival window) is a sign that it once belonged to the Godwin-Austen estate. I don't know whether or not this is correct, but it's a nice idea.

Thanks for your reply and information. It is very interesting.
The Godwin-Austens are now a little off my line of research. My main interest was Frances Ann (Austen) Bedford, my ggg grandmother whom I have a strong interest in.
I am planning a trip to Europe next year and hope to visit England and the area around Shalford and Kent where my gg grandfather is buried. One of the posts on this topic informs that St Mary's is going to be updated etc. I hope it is still there when I visit. Once again, thanks for your information. This site is marvelous for asking and receiving advice given I live so far away.
