Title: Gilmores of Killyleagh/Comber
Post by: Willson on Tuesday 21 October 08 23:03 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm looking for information on the Gilmore family of the Killyleagh/Comber area. To date, I have found information on:

Joseph Gilmore
William Gilmore (son of Joseph)
Margaret Gilmore (William's wife)
Assorted children of William and Margaret

I am especially interested in the wife of Joseph Gilmore, his parents, and the date of his birth and death.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Thanks aghadowey,

Here's what I've gathered so far (mostly from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/G/GilmoreGilmer.htm, Family Search, the Washington State digital archives, and family records)

Joesph Gilmore (b. ~1810???) Don't know much else about him.

William Gilmore (b. 1836, d. 1911 in Seattle); Parish Killyleagh; husband of Margaret McDowell ; father of Pendelina b. 30 Jun 1868 & Robert McDowell Gilmore b. 10 Mar 1874

Margaret Gerch McDowell  (b.1843, d. 1903 in Seattle) Parish Comber; daughter of Robert McDowell ; married William Gilmore 26 Dec 1862

Pendelina Gilmore (b. 1868, d. 1947 in Seattle) daughter of William Gilmore and Margaret Gilmore

Thanks in advance for any help.

William Gilmore and Margaret McDowell had quite a large family. 1900 census says they came to U.S. 1892, were married 38 years, had 15 children (8 living). Note: children's ages in census are not all correct.:
1. Joseph Francis (1864-d.y.).
2. Prudena (1868-1947 Washington State) m.L.E. Graefe.
3. Sarah (1870-1945 Washington State) m. -- McAllister.
4. Minnie Ann (1872)
5. Robert McDowell (1874)
6. Joseph (1877)
7. Hugh (1879)
8. John (c1881-1938 Washington State)
9. Margaret Francis (c1885-1954 Washington State)
10. Wilhelmina (1886)
11. William (1867?)
12. Samuel (1867?)

I suppose you already know this.  In Griffiths Valuation 1863/4 there are 2 Joseph Gilmores - one in Corporation and one in Shore Street, Killyleagh
Also one William Gilmore in Clay and one in Toy and Kirkland.  Also, LDS has some dates for Joseph Gilmore, which I expect you already know.  The Presbyterian Church Records and Church of Ireland are in PRONI.  I had them searched for our McCormicks from Killyleagh. RosemaryJoan

Probate was granted to Sarah Gilmore of Killyleagh, the widow.  You can purchase a copy of this will from PRONI if they have it.  RosemaryJoan

Maryderry, thank you very much for trying to help a chatter as you have proven so often in the past.  I do think its time to question the tone of our copyright protectors, to me its very rude and unacceptably hard nosed in their manner of delivery.   I too have had the eraser applied, I can personnaly admit my stunned reaction at least twice has been I shall give it all up now permanently, etc.   I did on one ocassion for some months.

However the greater good is to other chatters and not to the awesome powers people take on themselves. Perhaps you will like me, when at my best,  try to forgive their rudeness and intolerance of well meaning help and lets all ask them to have a twitter of some humanity towards someone trying to help, by prefacing their remarks with as a draft example

'Thank you very much for trying to help another chatterer but we are forced to remove part or all of your message below, to protect our website from copyright violations. . Our decision is as follows. Information removed due to copyright violation. etc etc.
Please continue in trying to help our chatters but try to help us avoid this action in the future as we have powers to ......
What do you think yourself of such an approach?. Best of luck in the future, please continue helping others here and of course elsewhere. Warn me quickly and gently if you see me going off the rails with enthusiasm
Jim

If you have followed up the suggestions made already eg familysearch, I think the next best channel to seek is the Ulster Historical Foundation ie www.ancestryireland.com
births
GILMORE JOSEPH 1828 ANDREW Antrim
GILMORE JOSEPH 1831 JOSEPH Antrim
marriages
GILMORE JOSEPH 1853 THOMAS Down
GILMORE JOSEPH 1857 JOHN Down
while there look up Tombstones from Ulster

Looking for  Church records eg from Ros Davies Co Down Website
Church of Ireland, Killyleagh- St John the Evangelist in Church Hill St, Killyleagh town at the NE end.   Has records from 1813, graveyard attached, gravestone inscriptions available UHF Vol 6; email me Ros Davies for a look-up in old graveyard or pay per view surname search for gravestones on www.irishgenealogy.ie
1st Presbyterian Church, Killyleagh in Plantation Street. Records available are from 1692.
The graveyard surrounds the church on about 2 acres; gravestone inscriptions available UHF Vol 7 . There are a few 18th century graves with oldest being 1754; email me Ros Daviesfor a gravestone look-up or pay per view surname search for gravestones on www.irishgenealogy.ie; North of Ireland FHS holds marriages 1692- 1872 & baptisms 1835- 1882; Killyleagh Library has marriages 1757-1760 also 1833-1872 ;baptisms 1693-1695 & baptisms 1835-1881 (personal visits only)
There are more churches.
I dont think I can help further so good luck onwards, Jim
