Post by: gollygee on Tuesday 01 February 05 21:53 GMT (UK)
Looking for the birthplace and parents of Henry Shapcott born c.1793. He married a Frances Roberts on 16/02/1834 at Stockleigh English.

In 1851 Census his birthplace is shown as 'Not Known'!

Any help very gratefully received.

Regards,

Gollygee

Hi Golly!

I was thinking that if you saw the original mariage  entry in the parish register it would say if Henry was 'of this parish' or of a differant one.

That would then narrow down which parish registers to look at with referance to a baptism, which in turn would give you the parents.

Best Wishes

Debbi ;D

Hi Golly,
The Henry Shapcott who married Sybella Flook is certainly not the same person who married Frances Roberts in 1834.
I say this because Henry Shapcott was my 4x great grandfather and Sybella Flook was his second wife !  His married his first wife in South Brent, Devon in 1804.  Later, they went to Bristol where his first wife died.  Sybella Flook was the mother of his daughter's husband.  So he married his daughter's mother-in-law !
I have not been able to find my Henry Shapcott's baptism in Devon.  At the time he married in 1804 he was described as being 'of the North Devon Militia' suggesting he hailed from North Devon.  On his Marriage Certificate to Sybella Flook he gives his father's name as Henry Shapcott and says he was a farmer.  However, I have been unable to confirm any of this with any other records.  Unless I have a breakthrough, my Henry is the end of my Shapcott line.  It would have been good to link him with one of those offshoots of the Shapcotts of Shapcott Barton in Knowstone, North Devon.
