Title: Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960
Post by: Mean_genie on Monday 20 October 08 15:51 BST (UK)
These have just been released today by Ancestry. You wouldn't know this from their own site, but you can get to it using a link on TNA's website

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/214.htm?homepage=news  (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/214.htm?homepage=news)

It includes the Empire Windrush, lots of Hollywood stars arriving in Britain on the big cruise liners, Wallis Simpson coming to meet her Prince, the Kennedy family en route to the American Embassy in London in 1938 and my great-great-grandparents returning to Scotland after 13 years farming in Saskatchewan.

Hi folks
Anyone with a full membership on A*****y willing to do a lookup for me as my membership only covers UK records.

I had a quick look for William Marshall born Dover 1895. Sailed to Canada 1924 from Liverpool.
I'm trying to see if he came back. He had relations in Liverpool who he stayed with before he sailed. If any possible matches could you let me know. I've not found him in Canada yet (bit of a big country to search when you don't know where he settled).
I saw one or two possibilities but could not view any information that would help.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards panda

Does the database only include ships coming from outside Europe?
I'm looking for Hemine Schneider born Cologne 1898. She lived on Madeira before coming to England and getting married in Warwickshire in 1922.
Would there be any chance of anyone finding her passage on An***try?

I have found several names, but unfortunately when I try to look at the image it is too faint and unreadable. I have reported 2 of these.
I have had e-mails back, thanking me and saying that they will not be able to improve them until the next time they are doing their adjustments. Sorry scheduled updates!

Sharpie

The database includes some people travelling from Europe - ie if the voyage began outside Europe but called it at European ports before docking in the UK, then the passenger lists will include the people who came on board at Gibraltar, Lisbon etc

For anyone who hasn't found the people they are looking for, the reason may be that their forenames are not written in full, but only appear as initials, or Mr, Mrs, infant etc. More worrying is the fact that quite a number of names do appear in full on the lists, and are clearly written, but the surnames are not included in the index. Hopefully this will get fixed eventually, but meantime it may be worth searching without a surname in case that brings up the results you want.

Happy hunting.

It would help to solve a small puzzle!

HI

I couldn't find that particular family, but there is a John Humbertson born c1879 aged 19, departing from Montreal Quebec and arriving Liverpool on the 'Labrador' on 24 May 1898.

Mind you, other people are better than I am at this sort of thing, so hopefully they might be able to find Florence! Good luck - I still haven't found my German g-grandfather, but live in hope that the European immigrants might eventually be indexed.

I have found a Mr and Mrs Clulo both b. about 1864 age 40 dep. DELAGOA Bay, Mozambique, arr. Southampton 3 Sep 1904, on the 'Durham Castle', Union-Castle Mail Steamship Co. Ltd.
via, [!] Durban[Natal],East London, Port Elizabeth[Algoa Bay],Cape Town, Tenerife.

Is there any way of ascertaining their first names?
How accurate would ages and dob be?

He is described as glassmaker, so I know he is connected somehow.

I have a Thomas Clulo b. 1858, m.Eliza Hibbert, but he was a labourer later and I don't know how he could afford a trip like this!

Any ideas welcome,

I got so excited at finding these had been released only to find nothing, how disappointing!

I'm looking for an Antonas Matiozraitis and and Elzieta Dielinizaitis who emigrated from Lithuania to West Lothian in Scotland around 1902 - 1904 I'd guess. They aren't on the 1901 census and were married in Scotland in 1905.

I was sure they'd be on one of these lists but I can't find anything but I am just being rubbish at using the search fields???

Help!

I found quite a few relatives born in Ireland who became U.S. citizen in the passenger records. However, I've also failed to find (so far) quite a few relatives who were British citizens that I know came back to England and Ireland from India and U.S.

The passenger lists are for ships entering British ports from destinations outside Europe. They include all passengers regardless of nationality. Unfortunately there are no collections of passenger lists for journeys within Europe, so you will need to see if there are any other sources to trace your European migrant ancestors.

TNA's Research guide on the subject might help you, or at least convince you it's not worth trying!

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=243 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=243)

Sadly for us, it was perfectly possible for people to move between countries without leaving any kind of paper trail, until around the First World War, when countries started requriing passports and placing limits on immigration.

As Madeira seems to have been a regular stopping off point for ships to and from the 'new world' can anyone please have a quick look and see if there is a Miss Hermine Schneider born 1898 arriving between 1915 and 1922.

Could I be cheeky, please, and ask someone to do a look up for a Lancelot Alfred Gales (born 1882) and his wife Bertha (born c1881) (they also had a daughter Olive but she died in Canada).  I have them on the 1911 Manitoba census but I believe Bertha came back to England but not sure about Lancelot!

I have looked at the link given but do not have membership.  There is a Lancelot A Gales - port of arrival Southampton and also a Bertha Gales - port of arrival Liverpool.  If someone could let me have details of these entries to confirm whether or not they could be mine, I would be most obliged.

With many thanks.

Mabel Harris b. 1905 should be returning from Canada sometime in the 1930s (possibly late 20s or early 40s though).
I already have the record of her outbound journey in 1929 and would love to know when she came back.

Hi Tazzie

That is brilliant!  Lancelot's mother came from Hindon and I know, after travelling the country (Lancelot's father worked on the railways) they settled back in Hindon.

Looks like Lancelot returned to home base.  Lovely to have all the details of their return.

With many, many thanks.

Can some kind person do a look up for my friend. I have found Aileen Jones b 1949 sailing out with her Mother Florence from Southampton to New York on the QE1 in 1954. They returned roughly 6 months later as they hated America but can anyone find their return journey? I presume that they sailed home again (too far to swim!) and she can't remember how they got back as she was only small.

Hi everyone. I've been following this topic with interest and have noticed how some A*****y UK subscribers can access the database and others can't. Have been with them for years, so am a bit 'miffed' that I can't. Can someone do me a favour and find me some details on Mrs Sarah Sanders (b 1875) returning from Canada, with her sons Alfred, Stanley and Thomas (b 1906)? Possibly cheeky but I would be very grateful. Meanwhile I shall investigate what my annual subscriptions actually cover! Thank you!  :)

I know my British grandparents, Elizabeth (b.1862) and William Hills (b.1860) returned to the UK between 20 June 1891, when their dau. Elizabeth was born in the USA, and 2 Oct.1892 when their son was born in London.

I've tried full names, initials and just surname to no avail.

If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be very grateful.

I'm looking for my grandmother in the same time frame 1890-1892 and can't find her so I'm wondering if maybe some of the records from that time period may not be there  :-\

Does anyone know why these dates are being used?[1878 - 1960]
Are there any plans for earlier or later batches to be put on line?

I don't want to appear ungrateful, I was just wondering 8)

It would seem that some parents may have been economical with their children's ages due to the cost of the ticket,( e.g, children under 3 went free)which would explain why my mum is down as being 9 in 1932 when she was born in 1921 her sister also is down as 11 and she was born about 1917,worth bearing in mind.

Kooky

Passenger lists were not systematically kept before 1890 (so the 1878-1889 part of this collection is incomplete) or after 1960. There is more infro about passenger lists in general in TNA's research guide:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't find people who should be on there.
My great-uncle Morris visited England from America in the 1920s. I've found him going back to America, but not arriving here in the first place.
It seems the records are not complete.

Could someone do a look up for me.   :)

I'm trying to find a departure from London to South Africa for the Harrington Family.

Arthur Benjamin Harrington, born 1860
Frances Emily Harrington (wife) born 1869
Elsie May Waller (step daughter) born 1894
Alice Mary Harrington (daughter) born 1899
Henry Harrington (son) born 1902

I'm told they left England for South Africa sometime between 1900 and 1915.  I would also like to discover their subsequent return to England during that period.

Elsie May Waller arrived in Australia in 1916, I have all that.

Many thanks.

Aside from the 1878-1889 period the lists should be complete. The people you can't find are more likely to have been wrongly transcribed. Some of the handwritten lists are not easy to read, which would account for some of them, but, more worryingly, many people appear without surnames, even when their full names are on the lists.

I have also found the passengers of one ship sailing from Australia via India wrongly listed under the another ship from Quebec - all nine pages of them.

Do you have any idea of William Hills profession or where they had been living in the U.S. ?

I found this very curious entry which includes all the names you have given but has two Elizabeths in a cabin while a William is listed on the ordinary passenger page.  Could this be because Elizabeth is travelling with an infant and is also pregnant so for comfort was in a cabin?

The ages for the adults are a bit off but the other information seems to fit:

Ships Name:  Lord Gough
Port of Departure:  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Port of Arrival:  Liverpool
Date of Arrival:  May 22, 1892
Cabin Passengers:  Mrs. Eliz.h Hills age 28 Profession:  Lady
Miss Elizabeth Hills  age 9/12 infant

Passenger:  Wm. Hills age 28 Profession:  Engineer

Stranger things have happened   ;)

I'm sure that's them - they returned in an emergency situation so probably took whatever passage they could find or afford.   Many thanks

I am so disappointed  :'(
My grandmother (probably) returned to Britain from Canada on SS Montclare which ran aground in the Firth of Clyde 21/22 March 1931.

I have searched every way I can think of, but there doesn't appear to be a passenger list for this voyage.  The ship didn't actually sink but perhaps in the confusion the paperwork was forgotten.

Just needed to share that, it's so frustrating when the time comes to admit defeat.

What a great resource.  I found myself on there twice in 1957 and 1959.  It even gives the address of the house we stayed in on leave from India in 1957 as well as the ship names - so now I have photos of those as well :)    Somewhat surreal to see yourself on ancestry though
