Title: Look up request - Joseph Roscoe
Post by: Exiled Mancunian on Monday 20 October 08 09:51 BST (UK)
Joseph Roscoe was born about 1800 or 1801 at Bispham, in the parish of Croston. Family legend always had it that he was a farmer. In 1822 he married Isabella Glover at All Saints Church, Wigan. He was given as 'of the parish of Croston' and she as 'of this parish'. The two witnesses are shown as James Leigh (no idea who he is) and John Glover (Isabellas father or brother?). Afterwards he must have returned to Bispham with his wife as their first two children were born there. So far so good.

However, the 1841 census shows him as living at Chapel Lane, Wigan (which is in St. Georges Ward, HO107/623) with his wife and 6 children aged from 15 to 10 months. This is in the centre of Wigan and not farming country. He is still in Wigan on the 1851 census, but by 1861 his wife is shown as a widow.

A chance discovery of the baptism of one of his children in 1825 at Ormskirk shows his abode at Lathom (not far from Bispham) and his occupation as shopkeeper. This might throw some light on his move to Wigan.

My two look up requests are as follows. Firstly if anybody has access to the 1841 census for Wigan could they please post a transcript for the entry for Joseph and family (HO107/623, E.D. 14, sch 39) as mine was done in pencil in the Leigh Records Office many years ago and has now faded in places.

Secondly, does anyone have access to Wigan directories anytime between 1833, the earliest he is known to have been in Wigan (though in theory it could have been anytime after 1825) and 1841. If so, could they please look to see if there is any reference to Joseph being a shopkeeper.

Any help, however small, will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Margaret Roscoe 15......... Piecer
Joseph Roscoe 10............ Piecer

Hi Judi,
Many thanks for your replies and I apologise for not thanking you earlier. I read your replies when I got back yesterday but we had a power cut before I got chance to thank you.

Just one query. What does '?K' mean next to Josephs age>

Thanks once again for your help.

Chris

Hi Chris

Sorry should have explained that  :-[

His occupation is written in 2 letters first letter I cant read second looks to me like a K

often FK means Framework knitter but the letter doesn't look like an F to me so unsure someone else may be able to help  or offer an alternative.

I, too am interested in Joseph Roscoe, who was the son of John Roscoe of Bispham Green.  John Roscoe was a farmer in Bispham Green at the time of his death, (possibly the tenant farmer of Roscow’s Farm, Mawdesley?).  He died in June 1836, aged 74, and his will leaves one shilling and no more to his son William and his daughter Frances Monk, £15 to his son Joseph, £5 to his grandson Thomas (son of William) and the residue to his granddaughters (daughters of Frances Monk).  He was buried in Rufford.  A John Roscoe of Bispham, husbandman, married a Margaret Smith in Croston in 1789.  There is also a record of the burial of Anne wife of John Roscoe of Bispham, husbandman, earlier in 1789.  There is a record of the burial of Margaret Roscoe, aged 72, at Rufford in 1829.   My great great grandfather, James Roscoe, was the son of Joseph and described Joseph as a farmer on his marriage certificate.  However, there is no other evidence that he was a farmer.  I assume from your interest in the surname Edge that you too are interested in James, who died ca 1892.

Joseph Roscoe's wife Isabella (nee Glover) was apparently born in Scotland.

Hello!  I'm descended from Joseph Roscoe and Isabella Glover, and I've been working on finding Joseph's parents - now I can go searching for John and Anne/Margaret, thank you!  Have you found any further information?

I've found several earlier Roscoe family trees from a similar area, but can't find any which seem to tie into our one.

My line comes down from Joseph, to his son Joseph, to Edward who emigrated to New Zealand, to James, by his first wife, who was my grandfather.

Hi Jane  - thank you for your message to me - I have hunted and can't find any way to reply to it privately!  I thought I was reasonably techno-savvy, but my internet guru husband can't find a way to message you either.

Maybe we need to club together and order a birth certificate!

Hi Miriam and Jane,

New members must make at least three postings before being allowed to use the PM facility.
See Help-Page:  http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php

If you reply to this post you should be able to send a personal message, but Jane will also need to post one more reply.  You can then exchange email addresses privately (please don't post them on the thread).

Hope this helps,

Jean

Thank you!  I thought I was going bonkers.  The very helpful Mr Mancurian did point me in the right direction, and the right link appeared for me this time.

If only the rest of my Roscoe information would appear magically like that.

Hello I know the original post was some time ago but are you aware that there is a Roscoe's Farm in Bispham Green? Please let me know if you would like any details.

Hi
The current farm buildings date from 1703. They were originally farmed by the Roscows but there were no Roscows here by 1841.
I have seen various sale documents etc. I know the farm was sold in 1863 to the Blackburn family (members of which were tenant farmers here at that point) and sold onto the Monk family inn1828.
I don't know if you are local but I can send photos if of use.

Yes, that’s the right marriage.  Francis seems to have become a farmer in her own right when she had separated from Roger Monk.

Many thanks

Many thanks.
