Can anyone find any reference to an Arthur I'ANSON in the 1851 census. He would have been aged about 9 years and in later censuses is shown as being born in Paddington. I know he died in Kensington in 1890 so is likely to have been in the Middlesex Area in 1851. Many of the transcriptions of his unusual surname are incorrect, and he (and other members of his family) have been listed as being JANSON. Obviously any help would be very much appreciated. Ron

Hi Tati - many thanks for your information, although it has upset my apple cart a bit! Obviously this Alfred I'Anson is 10 years younger than the one I have in the 1881 census - but there's something there that makes me think it's the same one. The locations of the births tie up with what I know, and some of the names - Clara and Alice and long standing traditional names in this family!! I'm wondering whether Alfred wasn't 39 in 1881, but 29 and his age has become wrongly transcribed or something. I think I'll have to try to get hold of his birth certificate. Once again thanks very much for your (thought-provoking!) info. Ron
