can anyone help with image below ???
-
Is it from a Scottish birth certificate?
Bit hard to read but looks like 1852? December Downpatrick.
-
It is from a Scottish bc. I think you have hit the nail on the head... ;D
-
Civil registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland only started in 1864 but from 1845 for other marriages so there might be a chance on getting the marriage certificate if they weren't Catholic. What were the parents' names?
-
looking at their time in Scotland they seem to have been Presbyterian/CofS. What caught my eye is the name of the son - Hans - which doesn't seem too Irish but may be the source of the MARTIN family legend that there was a "German" connection (sound of man clutching at straw...) I am currently trying to prove that Samuel had a brother Hans who married a Rachel MARTIN... ::)
1861 Census recs.

William, son, 6, Scholar, Ireland
James, son, 4, Scholar, STI, Falkirk
Joseph, son, 2, STI, Falkirk
Hans, son, 2 months, STI, Falkirk

IGI lists 9 children of Hans Tate and Rachel Martin.
Children of Samuel Tate and Mary Johnston also listed: James, Hans and Joseph born Falkirk and then 2 surprises:
1. Robert born 15 Nov.1868 Co. Down
2. Mary Ann born 28 Sept.1870 Co. Down
If these last 2 children arethe same family it looks like Samuel and family might have returned to Ireland.
Did a bit more searching before posting the above details and Eureka!
Samuel Tate, son of William, married 7 Dec.1852 Downpatrick to Mary Johnston (and Robert and Mary Ann seem to be their children:

Civil registration of births, death and Catholic marriages in Ireland began in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). For earlier dates you'll have to search for church records (if they exist).
