Could someone help me with this guy who appears in the "Going to America" list on Ancestry born Liverpool 1867. I would appreciate news of any family members accompanying him too. Thanks.
-
To start with, there is a tree on Ancestry with him in it. I don't know if it's your tree or not.
If I have found the right passenger record, it is Samuel C O Foreman aboard the Arizona reaching NY on 17 april 1893. He is 26, a mason. This might not be the right guy, or it could be filled out wrong, but if I am reading it right, it says he is a citizen of the US but born in England, and he is heading to Cleveland. There's a starting point. Let me see if I can find him in the 1900 census.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it is my tree on there. He was a stonemason so it must be him. My problem has been that they drop the last surname in UK so I dont know what they called themselves in the States. Are there any more Owen Foremans on the same ship?
thanks again

To see N.Y. passenger lists (1892-1924) yourself go to www.ellisisland.org (have to register but site is free).
For earlier N.Y. passenger lists see www.castlegarden.org (free, no need to register)

I have a Samuel C Foreman in the 1920 and 1930 census in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1920, he is a retail salesman at a gas station. Doesn't match the 1893 passenger record, but he could have reinvented himself by that point. In 1930 he has no occupation. He is 52 in 1920, says he came over in 1885 and was naturalized in 1891. He has a wife, Dorothy, who is German and a son John who is 20 and born in Ohio.
In 1930, the only changes are that Samuel is retired and John is married to Goldie K, who is 36. It says they got married when John was 19 and Goldie 25. It must have been right after the 1920 census. Samuel also owns his home, worth $12,500, and has a radio.
Ok, now I think I have them in 1910 Ohio in Cleveland. With Samuel, 42, is wife Dorothy, 34, born Germany, stepdaughter Margaret Ions, 13, born Ohio, stepson John, 10, born Ohio, mother-in-law Anna Labryk, 55, born Austria, and one non-relative.
With this, I was able to find them in the 1910 census. In the household are:
Samuel Foreman, 42, married 3 years, 2nd marriage, born Engl, owns grocery store
Dorothy, 34, 2nd marriage, born Germany,
Margaret Jons, stepdaughter, 13, born Ohio, father engl, mother Germany
John Jons, stepson, 10, born Ohio, father Engl, mother Germany.
I have also found Dorothy in the 1900 in Cleveland with her first husband, Benjamin, and Margaret and John. Benjamin was born in England.
It looks like the John in the 1920 and 1930 census is John Jons/Ions, from Dorothy's first marriage. And I am not having much luck finding Samuel in the 1900 census.
Boy, so I hope this is your guy. ;D

If they drop the surname, should I be look for Samuel Owen?
-
I have now found the record on Ellis Island thanks. Last residence should be Garston not Farston. Where do you see the Cleveland reference. I do know that there are Owen family there who are related who create a large tool and die company.

Thanks Kath , Ag, and Sue for this goldmine of info. Its given me plenty to work on.
-
Great, keep us posted. And let us know if you need anything else.
-
Well since you are offering;
The parents of Samuel Charles and Percy - John Owen Foreman and his wife Susannah - you have shown to go out with Percy on the SS Bergenland in 1900 from Liverpool to Philadelphia and supposedly on to Cleveland. I have searched what I can in Cuyahoga county but cant find them. Any ideas? Thanks
-
Are they the ones in 1881 in Garston, Lancs? If so, by 1900 they weren't young'uns, were they? Maybe they didn't survive much longer after their trip.

Yes I thought that, they were 64. But why bother going if you didnt feel up to it - its a bit further than the Mersey ferry goes!
-
I know. I wonder about that. I had some rather elderly (for the times) relatives who made the trip also and I have often wondered what made them go. Very scary, and courageous.

City directory
If John and Susannah came to Cleveland in 1900
John must have died before 1902 as Susan is a widow
Died in Cleveland or maybe Philadelphia??
