Hi

In 1901 Robert Ritson aged 2 b Kendal is shown as a boarder with Betsy Burrow widow aged 51

Do you have James on the 1881 census which is free to search at www.familysearch.org

If so - where was he born and what was his birthyear

There is an 1891 entry for a James Ritson b 1867 Troutbeck - single in 1891.  Is that him?

1881 places James Ritson in Kendal, born troutbeck 1865 aged 16 yrs. Therefore would be early thirties on birth of his son in 1899.
On his sons marriage cert he is deceased that was in 1920 and had been living in Tebay.
I knew from records that Robert was a boarder, but family members think he had a sister Gertrude but I have totally exhausted that one.

Found James in 1901 and also Gertrude

Ancestry have him as b 1889 which threw me until I checked the image

24 Woolpack Rd Kendal (isn't it some kind of industrial area now??)

Have a look at RG13; Piece: 4912; Folio: 133; Page: 23 Westmorland.  He is shown as brother in law to Thomas Colinan/Colman and Gertrude was aged 5 so probably his daughter.  He was a widower which would explain why Robert was elsewhere

All Colman children b Kendal

Thomas Colman 39   b Kendal
Annie 38  b Ambleside
Sarah J  19
Mary Ann   15   Bertha Maud  13
Michard Richard 11
Arthur H   10
James Ritson 35 b Troutbeck brother in law - limeburners gaffer
Gertrude Ritson 5  b Kendal niece

Thank you, the Colman connection is correct. Why do you say Robert would be else where, do you mean work houses because we have had reference to this before.
Also I have copy of Robert Ritsons birth cert, how do I trace his mother as cannot find Keenans in westmorland, if she was from Ireland where do I look for her, can I research addresses?

We have already established that Robert was with Betsy Burrow in 1901 hence my comment.  She was perhaps better placed to care for such a young baby than Thomas and Annie Colman

You need to buy a copy of the marriage cert of James and Mary to establish her fathers name and occupation.  She died at 28 so was b around 1873

However - the marriage cert will not give her birthplace and research in Ireland is very difficult if you don't know which county they were born in

Looking at freebmd - the only likely marriage is this one

September qtr 1893 James Ritson Kendal 10B 1066

However - names on same page were Mary Ann Stilling and Dinah Hayes

No Mary Keenan

I have just checked the full GRO index and the reference above definitely does cross reference to a Mary Keenan

It's a matter of debate re: the reference so if you do decide to buy the certificate I would recommend you mention that the GRO image is blurred

Mary Keenan September qtr 1893  Kendal   Volume: 10b
Page: 1056

I have viewed both images for Ritson and Keenan and my vote goes to 1066 as the page number

I figured that might be the case, shame I only found this site last week.

If anyone does check in or has the same question robert was abandoned after his mother died in 1901 and ended up in the children's home in 1904.  Meanwhile James his father went to Rochdale area with the sister Gertrude and re married.  Robert meanwhile spent his time in the children's home, later leaving getting married and living in tebay Westmorland, where he is buried.  I know this as he is my G grand father, plus the census backs it up.

However does anyone have the facility to look up this address, 11 gawith place aka yard 73 I believe in 1901, I know Mary died in that house but a month later the census came and there not at that address
