Hi , I am trying to find info on my ggrandfather William Arnold.I have found a burial in Karori Cemetery (1902) that fits what I know of him .He is buried in a section CH ENG , I have looked on the plot map and can't see this section, does anyone know if this has any relevance or connection to England ?

Stands for Church of England

Hi
The abbreviation CH ENG refers to "Church of England"

Thanks Lu, didn't quite write it right.
If I remember the CH ENG section is on the right hand side. If you have another look at the map it is just past the Servicemans section on right hand side.

Hi Newbe
Nah, nah, ... wasn't correcting you ... (you had it right) :) ... just seems your "trigger finger" was quicker than mine and you hit the "post button" slightly ahead of me. ;D

That's ok Lu.
I have some Lewis Relies buried in that same section there. It took me a while to find them. It was back in 2005 at Easter when I was visiting Wellington

Hi denysenz
There is mention in PapersPast, of the sudden death of this William ARNOLD (and a short piece also re: outcome of the Coroner's inquest).
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast
Both articles in "Evening Post" - both under heading of 'Accidents and Fatalities' :
> 3 February 1902 > 4 February 1902
Lots of other 'hits' too for "William ARNOLD" - though I'm not sure they are all the same man ? (There is one who had a wife "Harriet" ... but I haven't read through them all to determine who's who).

thank you both , it doesn't sound like my William Arnold as I am pretty sure he was a Roman Catholic.I knew of the 3rd Feb article but will check out the 4th ,thank you

What other info do you have on this William Arnold. There is another one at Karori but he died 1906 CH ENG section as well.

I know he had died by 1903 when his wife Catherine died in Nelson. He was a mariner and was born in England about 1827.I can't find any record of his death in Nelson or anywhere in NZ and can only presume he died while at sea.

I found Catherine on the Nelson City Council database. I can also see why you say Roman Catholic as well.
Do you have Catherine's death cert? This would have on it if William was alive or not when she died

From denysenz's earlier thread - November '06 ... Christine Clayton found the following - a death notice for Catherine ARNOLD stating that she was the relict (widow) of William ARNOLD.
[Source: 'Nelson Evening Mail" - 17 August 1903].

Hi denysenz
I wouldn't totally discount this William ARNOLD (1902) as being "your man". There could be a variety of reasons why he was buried in a Church of England plot. (The age certainly seems right). The newspaper article gives occupation as "wharf labourer" aged 75 years - perhaps he was a "retired mariner" ?
Question : Did Catherine and William live together in Wellington and have you looked for them on an electoral roll ?
(Again, newspaper article (3 Feb. 1902) gives address as "Tinakori Road" (probably to be found on the Wellington Central Electoral Roll)) :

yes , that was my thinking when I read he was a wharf labourer.although Catherine , his wife is listed in the electoral role and Wises directory there is never any mention of William , not even on the electoral roles.Maybe becuase he was always at seaThere are other William Arnolds in Nelson but these are a different family again.my William was born in Cheshire England and married in Nelson in 1860 , they had about 6 children so he must have been there some of the time.I have ordered the death cert, for the one who died in Wellington 1902 and hope it may shed some light on whether or not it is the right one.

Hi denysenz
Mmmm ... that is the frustrating thing about trying to track our sea-faring ancestors. Good luck ... hope the death cert. brings the answers you want.

hurrah !I got the death cert. and it is him. Finally I have found when he died but of course it throws up more questions. The death cert details say he was born in Wales and arrived in NZ aged 12 in 1840.Birth certs of his children say he was born Birkenhead Cheshire.

Hi, the info is only as good as the informant know. Does it say who the informant was?
