Title: Crutches Fam House Strood
Post by: jeanharris on Tuesday 14 October 08 05:48 BST (UK)
Hi.
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am looking to find when Crutches Farm House was built.
I live there as a child and now want to know its history.
It is near The Three Crutches Pub in Old Watling Street about 2 miles north of Strood.
I looked for it in the census but unsure if it had the same name then. The street seems to be called Crutches Lane in the 1901 census.
 Thanks Jean.

More reading for you.

http://www.higham-kent-pc.gov.uk/more.htm

Are you sure that it is called Crutches Lane as I have found refrence to a Crutchers Lane in the 1891 census.

Brewers Gate Crutcher Lane  Cobham  Strood Kent
Park Corner Gate House Crutcher Lane  Cobham  Strood Kent
Poultry Yard Crutcher Lane  Cobham  Strood Kent
Crutcher Lane  Cobham  Strood Kent

Then when you look at 1901 Census the name has changed to Crutches Lane, is this a result of the influences of the Hospital in the area?

Also on the 1901 census there are a number of cottages named New Cottages. All occupied by farm laboures is this your place.

Hi.
Thanks for the info.
I always knew it as Crutches Lane.It is called Old Watling Street now and when I lived there.
In the 1901 census found a Odds family living at 1 New Cottages, members of the family still lived there in my time!(1948-1970)No thats not where I lived, sorry cannot remember what the cottages were called when I lived there. My dad worked on the farm it was then a fruit farm. All gone now!
Sorry Casalguidi I cannot find Crutches Farm House on that site.
        Regards Jean.

Hi Jean

I assume it would have been in Higham then ???

Have you identified the property in any census - this would enable us to try and find it earlier ie. looking at occupants/neighbours etc. ???

I think one end of Crutches Lane is in Strood and the other end comes out in Higham, I live near the Crutches pub and have often been down the same lane..

Hi.

Not sure what it would be under then.I know the other side of the road was under Cobham then.It could beHighham or Strood or even Frinsbury.
As it was built c 1800 it should be there in 1841 and 1851.As I am not sure what it may have been called before it was known as Cruches farm house it not easy to sure sure which house on the census in 1891 and 1901 is the right house.
Kentishqueen where do you live? I now live in Perth Australia but still visit the area as I have family in the area.

Hi Queen.
I take it you live near Knights Place.I remember it being built in c1960.The area was really lovely when I was a child.Just woods and farms. Would I have known your cousins?
Any info would be great. On my visits back no time for research.
My dad's mother's family had a flower nursery in Strood which is now Tesco's!
They were the Illman family and it is know they sold flowers and plants to Charles Dickens who lived near by at Gads Hill Place Higham now a girls school.

Hello Jean,
I work with a load of girls who remember it all being farms and woods up where we live, would have loved to have seen it then.
Think my aunt and uncle lived here for about 35-40 years, moved out a few years ago..

Hello again Queen.
Sorry but none of the names ring a bell.
I moved to Frinsbury when I married 1970 so maybe I missed them.

It hot and sunny here in Perth, nearly lunch time.I now live by the Indian ocean,a world away from Strood!

            Regards Jean.

Thanks for that casalguidi.

As I have hit so many brickwalls in my trees now I am researching the place where my family once lived, starting will myself!
Crutches Farm was very close to Gads Hill in Higham where Charles Dickens once lived who had connections to my Illman family.

Jean, take a look at this free newspaper trial http://access.gale.com/newstrial/ - there is something regarding the sale of "Crutches Farm" in 1858.

It would appear that it isn't actually mentioned by name in some of the census hence the difficulty in accurately pinpointing the inhabitants.

Hi Jean

It looks like it might have been known as "Three Crouches" rather than "Three Crutches" when you get further back ie. 1801 http://archivemaps.com/mapco/kent1801/kent11_03.htm

Also, I forgot to mention earlier that the tithe award (c1840ish) shows the two "Three Crutches" properties with the SAMSONs in residence http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Maps/FRI/02.htm

Its still pronounced "Crouches" both the pub and the Lane.. strange how that tradition never left the district, while by your map this area should be called Stroud, not Strood...

Hi Jean,  I noticed this thread started life a few years ago, and hope that you are still interested in the life of your old home and that this message finds its way to you. I have recently purchased the property and am more than happy to share any info that I may have should you still require it...? Although the farmhouse is now divided into 2 separate properties.
Regards.

Hi Wilko.
Yes still interested in Crutches Farm House.
It has been two properties for as long as I can remember.
In 1948 my parents moved to left property after they married in the Jan.I was born there later that year!
My father worked on Crutches Farm and when he was made farm manager c 1962 we moved to the manager's house which was next door.
I lived in the house until 1970 when I married and now live in Perth Australia.
But my dear Dad aged 94 and my brother still live in the area.

            Regards Jean.

Hi Jean,
Thanks for the reply. I thought that the farmhouse was converted into 2 more recently so its interesting that it was done alot longer ago. We have moved into the left hand property (now crutches gate cottage) and coincidentally on Boxing Day we looked round the right hand property as a couple have only just moved in there also, and we were both trying to picture what it would have been like as one house. If you have any old photos that you wouldn't mind sharing it would be fantastic to see what it was like. Also if you are ever over visiting your family you are more than welcome to have a look should you want to, I'm sure the couple next door would not have any problem with it either as they too are very interested in the history.
Regards

Martin
