Title: Henry McAllister of Douglas, Lanarkshire
Post by: bagpipelover46 on Saturday 11 October 08 02:51 BST (UK)
Trying to find information on my great-grandfather, Henry McAllister.  Date of birth was August 31, 1885. Names of parents and siblings are unknown. He moved to Canada in the early 1900's and married Margaret Kyle Richardson (she was from Stranraer, Wigtownshire) Collingwood East, British Columbia, Canada. They had three children (Margaret, Henry and Andrew) in Canada, then moved to the United States and settled in Washington State.

I know it's not much, but it's all the information I have at this time. Any help in fiding out more about him would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

This looks like the family living in Lesmahagow in the 1881 census.

Dwelling: Bankend
Jane Wife 21 F Douglas, Lanark, Scotland
Ephreim Son 3 M Ireland
Alexander Son 1 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland
Andrew Head 22 Iron Miner Douglas, Lanark, Scotland
Andrew G.Father 68 Ireland

Thanks Karenlee,
Funnily enough, when I saw that Margaret's father was a road surfaceman, I thought Hawker.

I'm just looking at Margaret's parent's marriage and will post further.

Just logged on as I forgot to respond to this comment.
Andrew 68 from Ireland is described as g.father on the doc I read.

So, the line would be
Henry b1885
Andrew bc 1859
Alexander b?  say, 1836ish
Andrew bc 1813

I'm away this time.

This is quite useful and informative...

The marriage of David CRAWFORD and Elizabeth BROWN, as on SP -

David CRAWFORD, Corporal in the 93rd Highlanders, at present in Aberdeen, was on the 4th day of May 1848 married at Aberdeen to Elizabeth BROWN, there, relict of the deceased William NEWLANDS, Ships Carpenter, in Aberdeen, by the Rev John Murray, Minister of the Free North Church Aberdeen.  Witnesses were John PROVAN Private in the 93rd Highlandersn and John KEITH, Seaman, both in Aberdeen

So Elizabeth was on her second marriage... BROWN being her maiden name, her first married name being NEWLANDS.

According to SP, Elizabeth BROWN, who first married William NEWLANDS, then David CRAWFORD, was the daughter of Robert BROWN,

She married first in 1846 ... so she should be on the 1841 Census as BROWN  ....

Happy to have been able to help get you started... hope that from here on it all comes together for you.

Ditto Dave's suggestion about the PM, and I can send the documents that I found on to you.

Still confused about Robert RICHARDSON,  it seems that there are 2 possibles, might need some further research on that one.

Cheers

Hi Karen, thanks so much for the information on the Richardson line.  Now I know where the Kyle comes in as a family name. I was told that it was a family name, my Mother's middle name is Kyle.

When I was very small I went with my grandparents, Henry & Della McAllister, to Canada to visit my great-great Aunt Jean. She was the sister of great Grandma McAllister (Margaret Richardson).  I will have to ask my Mother if she knows if this was the Georgina on your list of names.  By any chance to you know what happened to the rest of the siblings? Which one is your family line?

Thanks again. Getting all this information from the wonderful people on here is super!

Talked to my Mother tonight, and she said that Aunt Jean was indeed Georgina.  She said that Aunt Jean married later in life, her husband's name was Bill Bartie and that they lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Hey Tori

I am no relation whatsoever to this line, just helping out......  ;D ;D

Great to hear the the mystery the Kyle name and the identity of Georgina have both been solved.

If you want to give me a list of names that you would like followed up, I would be happy to try and track them down.  My husband is in the UK on business, so I need something to occupy myself after the kids are gone to bed tonight.... and this is just the thing

Heading out now for an hour or two... my youngest has her end of year Piano Soiree.... her teacher does this little concert thingy at her house and has all her students play a piece so that the parents can applaude and congratulate... etc etc....

See you later

Karenlee
