Title: 1841 Census - I am looking for
Post by: CoryJR on Friday 10 October 08 21:24 BST (UK)
Hello,

Can anybody out there send me information on my ancestors during 1841? I am looking for:

William Roberts - Born around 1836 or 1837 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. So he would be about 4 in 1841. His father should be named Thomas Roberts. William also had a brother named John Roberts born around 1832. Can somebody be so friendly and send me the family & household information during this time?

Thank-you so much,

Cory

Oh Thanks!

Ok that looks like it, but for some reason the father of the family is named 'William'?....When other another document I have (a marriage cert in 1857) says the father is named 'Thomas'. Does it say anywhere what the father or mother does for a living? What does the 'Ag Lab' mean?

Ag Lab is the occupation - agricultural labourer, v v common!

Hi ,

Sorry, I put WILLIAM as the  FATHER -it should read THOMAS as the FATHER ! - I have gone back to the source and rechecked it.
Ag lab is the only occupation given to the father ,no occupation is given for the mother.

Cheers
Dolly.

That is terrific thank-you!

One last thing, I guess it doesn't say anywhere where Thomas or Elizabeth was born?

Hi,

1841 census only asked if the person was born in the county/country,if they where, the letter "Y" was put in the colum , or "I" for Ireland,or "S" for Scotland - your ancestors had a " Y" for yes, born in the county/country.
The later census returns had more detail on where a person was born.

Cheers
Dolly.

Oh really I see. I wonder if there is a way to find the 1851 census of this family then. See sometime around this period the family moved to Birmingham or so we think. Some of the children end up getting married there. I have been been trying to find out where Thomas Roberts & his wife were born for sometime now....

Hi Cory

This one looks to be a possibility given the parent's names and the proximity of Shelton (1841 census) and Crowmeole.

1851 census has:
HO107/ 1992/ 667/7
Shrewsbury St Chad Shropshire
Address - Township of Crowmeole
Thomas Roberts, head, mar, 40, Labourer ag(ricultural), born Minton, Salop
Elizabeth Roberts, wife, mar, 42, labourer's wife, born Heazler? Salop
Joseph Roberts, son, unm, 11, born Shelton, Salop
Elizabeth Roberts, dau, 8, born  Copthorne, Salop
Thomas Roberts, son, 7, born Copthorne, Salop

(No sign here of John, Richard or William but they would all have been old enough to be employed as farm servants/labourers themselves - possibly 'living in' at their place of employment - I will have a look for them but without a place of birth and with such a common surname it will be a little like the needle in the haystack :()

1851 census has a John Roberts, born St Chads, unmarried, aged 18, occupation AG Lab living as a servant in the household of a
John Bate, Farmer, in Pontesbury, Shropshire
(HO107/1990/255/ 9)

A possible for Richard might be:
HO107/2154/37/33
Marple, Cheshire
Address - Hollins Fold
Richard Roberts, servant of W T Walmsley, unm, 14 factory hand, born Shropshire Halton
(I think that this was a cotton spinning mill - the census entry runs to several pages -  and the head was Betty Walmsley, widow with her sons, William T Walmsley, son, unm, 34, cotton spinner
and Charles E Walmsley, son, unm, 27, also a cotton spinner)

http://www.marple-uk.com/hollins.htm - gives some background to the mill.

Wow thats great Nell.

The parents (Thomas & Elizabeth) ages seem to be a little off but I am pretty sure thats the family. My ancester William was definately born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. I have no idea where he went in 1851 (I am really trying to find out)... but he ends up in Birmingham and marries a Sarah Fletcher in 1857.  On his marriage cert...it says he is a Farmers Bailiff. I wonder if that helps out at all with the census search.

Thanks for everything thus far!!!

Cory

Another possible for Richard is
HO107/1994/544/ 12
Shropshire Alderton
Richard Roberts, servant, 15, Farm Labourer, born Shropshire Wem
living in the household of Richard Williams, Farmer of 88 acres, 1 Lab

1851 also has
HO107/1995/ 67/14
Wem
Address - Dark Lane
William Roberts, apprentice, 12, Apprentice to Tailor, born Salop Wem
(John Richards, head, mar, 56, Master Tailor, born Salop Wem)

It is interesting that these two both have Wem as their place of birth. There are however several other contenders for Richard Roberts, some giving Shrewsbury as their place of birth.

If you would like the images of all these possibles PM me with an email address and I will get them to you over the weekend.

I think that this is about as far as I can go with your family. I have looked through the 1851 census and extracted those entries for unmarried William Roberts' that appear to fit in age and birthplace.

HO107/2172/46/256
Chester St Peter
Address Watergate St
William Roberts, lodger, unm, 18, Ostler, born Shropshire

HO 107/1990/12/164
Shropshire
Condover Village
William Roberts, servant, unm, 18, Farm Labourer, born Salop Condover
(living in the household of Thomas Bower, Maltster and farmer of 26 acres, employing 1 labourer) - presumably William Roberts

HO 107/1992/260/3
Shrewsbury St Mary
Address - Castle Foregate
William Roberts, serv, unm, 17, house servant, born Salop Shrewsbury
(in the household of Frederick Hammonds - Fishmonger)

HO107/1994/445/1
Great Ness Shropshire
William Roberts, serv, unm, 19, B, Smith, born Salop Shropshire
(living in the household of Richard Blacksmith employing 1 man)
(in the same household there are:
John Jones, Apprentice, unm, 17, B Smith, born Salop Shrewsbury
Martha Jones, servant, unm, 13, born Salop Shrewsbury)

Good luck with your searching

Hi Nell,

On this marriage record you pulled up - does it say anywhere who their parents were? Or anything else on this record. I am pretty sure this is my ancesters marriage!

There is also a marriage that fits your family
Thomas Roberts to Elizabeth Jones
07 Dec 1831 St Chad, Shrewsbury, Shropshire (also an extracted record)
(This an extracted record from the IGI site)

Sorry Cory - that is the extent of the information given for that record.

Wht not post a request on this board for someone to do a lookup of this marriage in the St Chad's Parish Records - hopefully that would give you their fathers at the very least.

Nell
