Hi Everyone,
Like many others, I've got an album from my grandparents full of unidentified photos. The women in the attached photos are very distinctive so I'm hoping that some of you can identify them. I think the date is between 1910-1920.
The photo of the sole woman was taken by JB Smithson, Dene Bank, Ferryhill. I think that the second photo of the three women plus baby was taken by the same photographer - no name is given but the sofa is the same. Is the woman on the right wearing a uniform?
My grandparents, Joe Armstrong and Margaret nee Loftus, lived in Ferryhill from 1915 to c1940 but they came from Consett and Durham respectively. So these women are perhaps in-laws or friends.
Does anyone recognise them?
Yours in hope

Dear Moni
I'm afraid I don't recognise anyone in your photos but I have attached this one as it seems to have been taken in the same studio - B. Smithson of Ferryhill, and I think the sofa is the same as in your photos.
The man in the photo was James Loveless in a naval uniform and he joined up in January 1915 aged 19 years, so I presume this was taken just before - he died on HMS Warspite in May 1916. I am presuming the lady was his mother Mary Loveless nee Moreland.
The name Loftus does ring a bell; my grandmother may have mentioned it - I will check with my mother. My grandmother, Ella Liddle, lived in Ferryhill from 1914 to 2004.
Best wishes

Hi JSAK
Thank you for your message. Our families must have known each other! Sadly I don't recognise the names you mention or the people in your photo, and there is no one left in my family from that time now to help.
I hope that one day I'll find out who the women in my photo are. Good luck with your research.
With very best wishes
Moni
