My greaet grandparents lived in a house called Oak Villa in Uddingston around1914. Does anyone know where that was or if it is still standing?

I found this via a google search:
Clyde Valley Veterinary Centre
Oak Villa Woodstock Road
LANARK
Lanarkshire
ML11 7DJ
Phone: 01555 660000
There are several other references to it.

Or perhaps not: :-\

Do you know which street it was on?
-
Afraid I only know it was Oak Villa. It was Uddingston though and not Lanark.

Can you locate the house in the 1901 census (if it was built then)?
Was your family living there in 1901? Even if they weren't, I think there is still a way to find the house - someone more knowledgable than me may be able to advise you.
If you CAN find it, you can follow the enumerator's path by looking at the neighbours up and down the street. It is often possible to locate landmarks that still exist today and narrow down the location.

Hi,
The Post Office & Glasgow Directory for 1911 - 1912 shows a Edward Dairon, Oak Villa, Uddingston but no street name

Thanks for this. The address as shown on my grandmother's wedding cerificate is only Oak Villa Uddingston, which makes me think that it may have been a house of some standing. But I don't know how big Uddingston was in those days so maybe not.
Good idea about the census though.

Edward Dairon and family were staying on Old Mill Road, Uddingston in 1901. No mention of a specific house/building, but just posted in case it was the same place. :)

Thanks Hume
I was away just now searching through my census returns to see if I had ever looked for that one. For the record Edward Dairon was my great grandfather.

Hi Annie,
I didn't realise you were related to the Dairons. :) Have just viewed Edward's death certificate (d. 1914) and it says Oak Villa was on Croftbank Crescent. Looking at the map, this is just off the Old Mill Road of 1901.
And if you look on Google Maps (or Live Local ... it's a lot better image!), you will see the houses there are still standing. It's just trying to guess which one it is. ;D

It msut be age that makes me miss those things. I've got a copy of Edward DAiron's death certificate. I also have a newspaper cutting with his death but it jsut says Oak Villa Uddingston.
Hume, you've been great. Many thanks

I dont think Croftbank Crescent has changed much since 1912 (around 13 properties) but the names of the houses may have changed
-
This is a great result Annie.
I imagine "villas" to be lovely double fronted Victorian houses in their own grounds. ;D
If the house is still standing it may still have the "Oak Villa" sign on the house (as I believe they did in those times) but today it will most likely also have a street number and name.
I hope you can locate it. (If you do could you post a picture please?) ;D

I just tried to view this on google maps, and there is no satellite image - how frustrating! :(

Many thanks to all who have helped on this. I'm in Edinburgh and don't get through to the West very often but have just learned of the whereabouts of one or two Dairon graves and hope to go soon (I really need to get a life! lol) Not sure of Edward's grave though but I'll check out local churches whilst I am there.
I always imagined that Oak Villa would be one of those substantial Victorian houses because the Dairons were quite well off. Edward Dairon's daughter bought a house in Uddingston too in Clydeford Drive, around the 1930's I think, and I remember visiting it for a holiday as a child in the late 50's. Its one of those 1920 type bungalows with lots of space and little nooks and crannies - owned by a strict but kindly VIctorian Great Aunt who had very fixed ideas on how my sister and I should behave!
So I may have seen Oak Villa, maybe she pointed it out when we went for a walk, but if she did I don't remember.
Thanks again
Annie

Try http://maps.live.com with the post code G71 7JD. Not only is there the aerial view there is also a bird's eye view which is fantastic. Not in all areas at the moment though.

Yes, Croftbank Crescent is off Old Mill Road and there are several old properties still there. You can find it in the Glasgow A-Z Street Atlas.

Many thanks to all who responded on this. I now know where Oak Villa is and have even seen a 'picture' through maps.live. What a great website that is!
