Title: 1831 parish records
Post by: bettyb on Wednesday 08 October 08 18:36 BST (UK)
HI Aghadowey
Do you have any McQuilkin names on your 1831 parish records. Iam looking for my g.g.fathers father Thomas, he is on marriage certificate as coming from Inchadogill. My g.g father Thomas James was married in Aghadowey church.

Marriage took place in St. Guaire's Church of Ireland but groom's residence is written as Incha in the register (not Inchadoshire as on Bann Valley website transcription). Could be Inchadoghill or Inchaleen. Groom's surname is McQuillen.
Mary Jane Boyce's residence is given as Cashill and her father as Matthew Boyce, labourer. Did find record of a Matthew Boyce, weaver, of Maevemanogher, married 8 Jan.1851 Coleraine Registry Office to Eliza Young. Matthew was bapt. 14 July 1822 First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, son of Robert Boyce. Not sure if this Matthew is the father of Mary Jane Boyce.
Checked 1831 census and no McQuilken (or any variation) in Inchadoghill but not surprised because Thomas was a labourer and the family could have moved around quite a bit. Also not listed in Inchadoghill in 1833 Tithe Applotment list.
If you have any more details let me know and I'll do a bit more searching in my files.

Hi
Thanks for that info. I have that Matthew Boyce but dont know if one i'm looking for either. The only Thomas McQuilkin I can Find was married to Betty Dougherty, they had a son John born 29/7/1865, dont know if he was Thomas James brother or not Thomas James born 1850/51 if age on census correct I have no info on any other siblings. Thomas James on 1901 census in camus. John on 1901 in castleroe census, born 1866/67, maried to Letitia Matthews. Johns father was Thomas also.

There were McQuilkins in Castleroe townland since at least 1827 but they belonged to Macosquin Presbyterian Church and the 1st Thomas I can see in those church records is a baptism in 1912 for a Thomas James McQuilkin, son of John & Mary Ann (Caldwell).

Hi Aghadowey
My g.father John ( son of Thomas James & Maggie Boyce) lived in castleroe and belonged to Macosquin parish. He and other family are buried at Englishtown graveyard. I just cant find any info on family before Thomas James.
Thanks for your help

What was the name of John's wife? Mary Taylor or Mary Ann Caldwell by any chance?

Ten children listed in Macosquin Presbyterian Church baptisms (not Macosquin Parish) which is locally known as Englishtown. Let me know if you don't have all the names and dates.

Have those McQuilkins thanks. Can you help me with Mary Taylors mothers name think it was Stevenson or something like that. They may have been married in Macosquin.
Marys father James, siblings Robert S, James, Margaret Elizabeth.

Think it's too early as well as being quite far away from Macosquin. Mary (Taylor) McQuilkin was having children from 1922 onwards.

Not parish (Church of Ireland) records but baptisms from Macosquin Presbyterian Church:
15 Jan.1827 Isabella McQuilkin daughter of John & Anne Castleroe
22 Apr.1829 Wm. McWilkin son of John & Anne Castleroe
3 Aug.1832 Margaret McWilkin dau. of John & Anne Castleroe
20 Apr.1835 Hannah McQuilin dau. of John & Hannah Castleroe
(birthdates or ages not given)
9 June 1835 Jas McQuilkin son of Jas (not in com[munion]) & Mary Glenlary [Glenleary]
After this date townlands aren't given but mother's maiden name is listed. Next McQuilkin baptism is in 1876.

McWilkin is just a spelling variation of McQuilkin as you can see from the baptisms of John & Anne's children.
