Title: Henry Walter Taylor, Hastings Kent
Post by: spj_felin on Wednesday 08 October 08 10:58 BST (UK)
I am looking for any information on Henry Walter Taylor who states on census that he was born app 1837 in Hastings Kent.  I am fairly certain of him on 1871, 1881 and 1901 census where he is married and living in either Monmouth or Glamorgan in Wales.  He switches between the names Henry and Walter.

His marriage certificate of 1870 states that his father is Robert Taylor, Labourer, Deceased.

Although I can find several Henry Taylors before the 1871 census I am struggling to find the correct one.  I cannot find one on the 1841 census with a father Robert.  I have however found a Robert Taylor on the 1841 census in the Lewes House of Correction which may explain a few things!

My request is therefore for a baptism of a Henry Walter Taylor in Hastings, Sussex.  Any help appreciated - sorry its so long winded!

Hi spj

Firstly I've just looked at births between 1837 and 1840, the only Henry Walter I could find was at Oxford, December 1838, volume 16, page 83

None at Hastings at all.  Of course he could be born just before 1837 civil registration starts  ::)

Secondly Toni not sure that site will help in this instance, Hastings is not really in the Weald.  ;D

A couple of possibilities for the parents, assuming they married in Sussex

From the Sussex Marriage Index
Lewes St. Thomas Cliffe, East Sussex, 25 Jul 1824
Robert TAYLOR
Rebecca BEST, botp (B)

From the Sussex Marriage Index
Lewes All Saints, East Sussex, 29 Jul 1833
Robert TAYLOR
Elizabeth Rayner BARNARD, botp (B)

Hi

www.thesussexweald.org is a site about the history of  the Sussex and Kent Weald, a geological area.

The site includes genealogical information and information on towns and villages but doesn't include coastal towns, as the Weald is more northerly.

The Weald site is fantastic - wish I had ancestors in that area! :)

Have been looking at 41 and 51 census to see if I can match Henry/Walter with either of the couples or the mothers with no luck so far.

Last resort will be to purchase the birth certificate even it rules him out.

Beginning to think that he made up father's name on his certificate!

Other posibility is to see what info on the Robert Taylor in Lewes House of correction in 1841.  Think these records are held at East Sussex - but as I'm in Wales - a bit far at the moment.

Thanks once again for help so far.

Hi

If you find the records on A2A as being at East Sussex Record Office, http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/localandfamilyhistory/esro/visit/form3.htm you can get them photocopied.  It does cost a little but for something important may well be worth it.

I have seen on the East Sussex site that they have the records for Lewes House of Correction.  I can't find a specific reference for Robert Taylor on A2A though.  Do you think the record office would give information without a specific reference?  All I know is that there was a Robert Taylor there in 1841 as per census.

By the way I think I can discount the Oxford birth as he still seems to be in Oxford in 1901 and I know where mine is then!

My guess is in that case he was born just before Civil registration started.  I have one of those too  ::) ::)

You could always try phoning the Record Office, generally I find them very helpful.

Thanks Kerry I'll try phoning them.  I also think he was either before registration or they didn't bother - makes life difficult, thats why I was hoping for a baptism somewhere, but not having much luck with that either.
