Title: virgin media email again
Post by: downside on Wednesday 08 October 08 08:56 BST (UK)
This topic was last raised back on 13th August, but I have not been able to access my email since yesterday evening and their Status Page has no red traffic lights to indicate a fault.

I sent their Support  department an email but have not received a reply.

Do any other people who have virgin media as their ISP have problems?

Yesterday afternoon I was unable to access the Internet for a while, so it is not just their email server that I have problems with.

Hi there,

I'm in the same boat  :'(

There seem to have been quite few problems lately.

No problems here.

As though by magic they put 2 red traffic lights on next to email and webmail on the service status page minutes after I posted here.

Officially there is a problem but it happened way before 9:13 this morning.

It only seems to affect former virgin.net customers.  I spoke to a former NTL customer and their service is unaffected.

Yes I haven't had any email from Virgin.net since about 17.30 yesterday evening.
I phoned them at 06.30 this morning and they thought it may be due to a server fault. It seems to be nationwide now.

I haven't had any e-mails since yesterday and for the last few days, even the Virginmedia home page has been a bit odd.  I can't even access my mail account.

However, exactly like last time the e-mail server had a serious fault, it doesn't affect everyone.  My OH who also has a virgin.net e-mail address hasn't any problems, has been receiving e-mails and can access his e-mails via the website if he so chooses.

Apparently I can send e-mails though.  My OH has bought me a new laptop and has been setting it up for me.  He sent me an e-mail to make sure it worked and obviously due to the problems with Virginmedia, I didn't receive it.  So he decided to send one from my laptop to his PC and he received that.

If it is the same people having problems, it would suggest it is the same server as last time.  Perhaps Virgin should switch the people who are on the faulty server, to a different one.

Although I got an initial backlog of emails when it started downloading mail yesterday evening, some emails from yesterday lunchtime suddenly appeared this morning.

I've noticed that webmail is extremely slow this morning but normal email seems OK.

I got about 10% of my daily emails this morning. I.E. about 100 instead of 1000.
Nothing since.
By the time it is resolved properly I will have a huge backlog.

I got quite a few e-mails this morning (oops I mean Thursday morning), then nothing since about 11.00am.  I'm getting a bit annoyed now with Virgin, especially as this is the second time they've had this serious fault in the last month or so.  They must know that we want our e-mails and unlike last time, I can't even access them via Virgin webmail.  I see the problem has been an amber since mid morning, as far as I'm concerned it should still be red.  All I can say is thank goodness I don't use Virgin for a business.

Still having problems today.  I had a couple of e-mails this morning, then nothing since.  Now my OH, who hasn't had any problems with Virgin e-mails up to now, has lost his e-mail service too.

As this has now been going on since Wednesday, I think enough is enough and am thinking of changing to another company.  Anyone got any good ideas?  Google, for instance?

Lizzie

ps.  As I'm not getting e-mails, I have to keep coming back to Roots to check on any replies, not much of a problem, but it means I spend too long on Roots instead of what I'm supposed to be doing. ::) ::)

Grrrrrr!

No emails at all since this morning.

This is becoming altogether too frequent.

Time to change?

My OH Virgin e-mails are up and running again - why is he so important ::) ::)

I'm definitely going to change, I'm looking at other options at the moment, including Google.

I too am looking to change. I have been looking at Plusnet - who do the same package as I am on with Virgin (their Plan 2) for £3 a month less. Their ads are on RC sometimes.

My parents have just signed up to them and, so far, they seem to be pretty good. Oh and they have UK call centres.

cheers

According to the BBC Virgin and other email providers were the subject of a major spam attack which knocked out some of their systems.

Bit depressed by this thread. I've just decided to swap from AOL to Virgin broadband (I have cable TV already) - because I'm fed up with AOL problems. Now it seems like Virgin isn't any better. Maybe I'll hang on a bit longer

There's a report on the bbc website that they've been having a massive spam attack since Tuesday - it's here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7663982.stm

Hi there,

Although i was cross about the numerous outages with Virgin lately, after reading that link, I realise it's not entirely their fault. I have been with virgin for many years - relatively happily. Don't be depressed!  :D

I think you will find almost anything will be an improvement on AOL.

Best of Luck!

Seems to be back to normal, although I'm still receiving "old" e-mails.  I wonder why the company that Virgin uses for only some of it's systems was targetted, especially as it seems the same one that was down in August.

Dinie- I'll look at Plusnet.  I can't just change on my own as my OH and I share the Virgin package.  I know it is coming to an end soon, so I'll get my OH to look at Plusnet and see what he thinks.  Of course, as he's never suffered an outage, as his Virgin appears to use different e-mail suppliers and his e-mails must be with a different supplier, and in any case he doesn't get many e-mails.

Hello everyone, just reading your comments on virgin.net.  I have had the same problem, I hadn't been online from 1.10 and when I tried to access my emails last Tuesday,(7.10?) virgin kept throwing the username/password page back at me.  When I switched my computer on that day I got an update, "cleaning your disc space, etc. message" which I let run through and then when I tried to use Outlook Express, which downloads my virgin mails it kept throwing up a message that my password wasn't recognised.  I switched users on my desktop and successfully downloaded my husbands emails without any problem.  After 2 days of problems I sent an email to customer support at virgin and got a reply saying that they were experiencing problems with their webmail which they hoped would be repaired within the next 12 hours.  Everything is o.k. again now but I am confused that I could download my husbands emails on the same desktop (he is a second user on my virgin broadband account.)  We have Sky TV and I am considering going with them for broadband and phone, I am paying £14.99 a month to virgin for their lowest broadband option and am on BT option 1 with my telephone.  Any comments on this idea?

My husband doesn't have problems with his e-mails from Virgin either.  He is first user on our broadband account.  It seems that Virgin use many companies as e-mail providers and it was only one that was targetted by spammers, but trust it to be the one mny e-mails go through and not the one my husband's e-mails go through.

By the way, I am able to send and receive e-mails today without any problem, but cannot log on to Virgin webmail.  I just keep getting a message that my password isn't recognised, like you did,so I guess they've not sorted out all the problems yet.

I'm going to follow this thread for a bit longer before making the change to virgin. After all the problems with AOL I don't want to end up taking on a load more!

We've been with NTL/Virgin for 10 years. Generally they're not bad (OK - not a huge recommendation!) They work well for most of the time. About once a year we get a huge breakdown with no e-mail/TV/etc for 12 hours.

I can live with that. We even remember what it's like to talk to each other!  ;D

The problem was reported as being out of the control of Virgin.
The attack was on the company supplying the service,'Tucows'.
This only effected service via telephone line, not via cable.

Thanks Guy - although I am somewhat confused, when did you receive that email?

I was led to believe that this was a massive spam attack but it looks like it was a phising attack instead.  Phising is fraudulent whereas spam is normally an annoyance, so there is a major difference.  They have listed some examples here:

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/servicestatus/phishing-email.php

The initial attack was spam based ...... these latest emails are attempting to take advantage of the outage. The originators of these must read or watch the news as they appear to keep up with current events in the approach they take

Re:  Phising:

Am I at risk from this, I have Norton on my computer but experienced problems with virgin as reported in message on previous page.  The virgin webmail page kept asking for my password, also Outlook  Express kept throwing up a message that my password wasn't recognised when it tried to download my messages from Virgin.

I am the first user on the account, but I was able to access my husbands emails both via Virgin webmail and also by downloading to Outlook Express.

Re:  Phising:

Yes and Norton probably won't protect you either.

Phising (or fishing as it is pronnounced) is an email scam in which someone pretends that they represent a company like a bank and asks you to enter your account number and password on the security page of a fake website.

Your main protection is common sense.  No legitimate organisation will send you an email asking you to enter your account details as your password is secret even from them.  If you forget your password then they can reset it - which means removing your old one and then they will give you a new temporary one which you should change immediately.

I wouldn't give details via an email, it was just the fact that my password wasn't recognised to access my emails that worried me.

Thanks anyway
