Hi everyone
Can anyone help me find my grandmother her name was Mary Gowan born 1886 in a place called Annagh Kilnahue Gorey Wexford or should say she was living there when she got married in 1923 she was born 1896. I have tried to get a birth certificate for her but they can't find one for her in Wexford. I don't know Mary Gowans mothers name. All I know about Mary Gowan is that she was a protestant and changed her religion to catholic so that she could marry a James Dunne. Because of this her family disowend her. On her marriage certificate she has put down that her fathers name as John Gowan a Labouer. My mother told me that her fathers family (James Dunne) hated Mary Gowans family because she was related to John Hunter Gowan. so now I need to make the connection. I know John Hunter Gowan had a son Captain John Gowan. Who had a son John Gowan the IV but he never married the mother and I think this is the connection so what I need to know is what was the name of the mother of John Gowan IV . can anyone help please

Hi Manus
My gtgtgrandfather Henry Gowan had a brother called John who died in 1915 and they were grandsons of John Hunter Gowan. I have not got Henry's birth details as he was born about 1853 and so not registered. I guess they were born in Dublin but their father was born at Mt Nebo.

Why is this a stickie? Is Manus the moderator?

Have un-stickied the topic. It was likely first posted onto a sticky topic then split to form a new thread with the query. You can use 'report to moderator' link to let us know if you see something like this again.

Thank you aghadowey. I'll do that. It just seemed an unusual topic to be a stickie.

Hi Seanmac
Thank you for your reply and information Sorry I have just seen it.
The Mary I am looking for came from a place called St Benedict's Hollyfort Gorey Wexford. I have just found out she had a brother called Thomas Gowan I dont know much about him other then he was living in Rathdrum Arklow in 1956. Mary was born about 1897 so I am thinking Thomas must have been born about that time But I can't find any trace of there birth's maybe I should also post about Thomas on the Wicklow site as he may have died there.

Hi
My grtgrtgrt grandfather was also called Henry Gowan. He was a son of Hunter Gowan who was a son of John Hunter Gowan. He had a brother called John who married in 1858. John is on the 1911 irish census aged 88 so he may have passed away in 1915. Henry was born earlier than 1853 as he is married in 1849. He had a son Henry who was born in 1851 and later emigrated to the U.K. Wonder if he is the same Henry as your Henry?
-
Hi Kelsey64
My gtgtgrandfather was Henry, b 1829, his son Henry (my gtgrandfather) b 1853 m 1873 emigrated to UK in 1879.
The only sibling I have of Henry (b1853) is James b 1866, are you related to him or some other sibling?

Hi Claud,
Not sure if we have the same Henry. The Henry I am following emigrated to Leicester around 1879. He gives his birth year on the british census as 1851. He was married to Sarah Gowan Bentley and had three children I know of: Thomas Henry Gowan born 23/12/1874, James Gowan born 29/09/1876, and Sarah Gowan born 26/05/1878. All three children were born in Dublin.
-
Hi Kelsey64
That's the one.
They emigrated about 1879. The son James died before then in 1878. Henry's wife was Sarah Bentley (no Gowan), she was born in England. They had 4 more children in England. My grandmother was their daughter Sarah.

Hi Claud,
Looks like it is the same Henry. The different date of birth confused me!
Henry born 1829 had 4 brothers and one sister :Hunter, James, John, Thomas and Martha. He married Margaret Griffin 7/11/1849 in St. Tomas' Church Dublin. Her father was Phillip Griffin. They had the following children that I know of: Henry, William 12/07/1854, Mary Jane 23/04/1856, Martha 4/03/1859, Margaret 10/08/1860, John 16/08/1861 and James 21/11/1866. Apart from Henry the other children were baptised in St. Mary's Church Dublin. Two of Henry's children Thomas Henry (1874) and James (1876) were baptised in St. Peter's Dublin.
I'm related to Martha 4/03/1859.

Hi kelsey64
Thanks for the info. I have never been able to find any children of Henry(b1829) apart from my family: Henry(b1853) and just that James was b in 1866.
Would you like info from me and if so how should I send it?
Claud

Hi Claud,
Would be great to hear the family history from your side. You could send via a PM if that suits.

Thanks for that information Claud,
I didn't realise they had more children in England. I had found the records of the three born in Dublin. I already knew about Thomas through family history as he visited Martha's children in Dublin and brought his own family several times. This means that Martha and Henry obviously kept in touch after he emigrated.
-
Hi kelsey64
I don't know what contact there was between Martha and Henry but I knew Thomas and his wife Ann had been to Ireland. I thought it was once, as nothing has been passed down about the Dublin people. Ann's grandparents were born in Ireland, I don't know about her parents, but her family would have been a further reason for contact.
Just at the end of the war an older man and somewhat younger woman (don't know their relationship) from Ireland visited the families in Leicester, I do not know their names though. I have in the past tried to find contacts in Ireland but couldn't get any. Not knowing any names even was a drawback. So I'm pleased to have the contact now.

Hi Claud,
Thomas and Annie visited several times and also brought some of their children. Their son Thomas Frances also visited on his own as a young man not very long before he was killed in the war. Martha's children also visited leicester several times both before and after the war. The two people you mention don't sound like them as Martha's son was the youngest of the family. Nothing seems to have been passed down about your grandmother Sarah.

Hi Claud, My Grandfather was William Gowan, b 1888 in Leicester, as your listing. I do have some information and photographs of his family, one of which is a family group from about 1895. This shows Thomas, Sarah, and some of the children. Would be happy to send a copy, if you do not already have it.
-
Hi Claud,
Have been looking at the forum comments you made regarding your Grandmother, Sarah. It appears she was the elder sister of my Grandfather, William. If you require any information about William and his family, please feel free to contact me.

Hi hiatt219,
Thanks for your offer. I have that photo. If you don't know all the names I can help.
Have been trying to contact you by email, seems your address has changed. Mine still the same.

John Hunter Gowan was my gggg grandfather. He had TONS of kids so one of those is probably the father of your grandmother Mary (since the girls would have changed their names). If you have ancestry.com you will probably be able to narrow this down fairly fast. My ggg grandfather was the illegitimate product of JHG and Margaret Hogan, his mistress. His wife was Francis Norton. They lived in Wexford Co which includes Gorey...in fact that is where JHG is buried. Many of the kids immigrated to Leeds Canada, so you might want to look there too. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you so much!

Hello, I believe John Hunter Gowan lived at what is known as Mount Nebo, (name then changed to Mount St. Benedict later) in Hollyfort, Gorey, Co. Wexford.
He was a justice of the peace, and captain of the yeomanry during 1798. His house was burned by the rebels in 1798. There is numerous articles and pictures in the book Historic Gorey 4 - Reflections of 1798 by Michael Fitzpatrick. JHG died in 1824 aged 97 and is buried in Hollyfort Graveyard in the family vault. He is infamous for his involvement in the rebellion of 1798.
John Gowan Senior, born 1699 married Anne/Mary the daughter of Rev Henry Hatton, Gorey. Their first born son was Henry Hatton Gowan and the above John Hunter Gowan was his brother. p142 of Historic Gorey 4.
On page 120 of the book: Major Thomas Fleming, Royal Artillery who fought at the battle of Arklow in 1798, married Elizabeth Gowan 4th child and 4th daughter of John Hunter Gowan, married Major Thomas Fleming c1795.
Further articles on page 144, 145, 146 and p147 of Historic Gorey 4.
p147 gives information on the last will and testament of JHG who died 24/5/1824 and lists the children etc.
Also Gowan-Hastings Family in Canada.
Hope this helps!

Thanks...most of this I have already, but I appreciate your help.

Hi Lochgarman
Would love to get a copy of that book you mention Historic Gorey 4- reflections of 1798 by Michael Fitzpatrick. Would you know the publisher or ISBN number or where it might be bought?
Thanks a million.
-
Hi Kelsey,
No problem here is the info. ;D
Historic Gorey 4 - Reflections of 1798 by Michael Fitzpatrick.
it was printed by "the central remedial clinic training unit" in dublin.
i have the telephone number too so PM me if you want it - i would assume i cannot post a telephone number on the website!!
there is no isbn number or barcode or anything on the book. It was published in 1998.
It was just a local publication for Gorey as part of the series of historic gorey books by michael.
Unfortunately Michael does not keep books to sell; they just are sold locally until they sell out- i have asked him before about any spare copies of his books.
It might be hard to source as it is a more local history book and not in general circulation. Saying that
though i have sourced copies for sale in the USA sometimes you are just lucky and find one for sale on the internet.
If you have no luck in sourcing it PM me.
Thanks
Gerard
-
Hi lochgarman,
Thanks a million for that info. I'm hoping it might be available through the county library so I will try that route first. If I have no luck I will PM you. Its a pity those local history books are not more available. They are usually invaluable. Even in the official 1798 Centre in Enniscorthy which I visited last summer the selection of books was small. Very disappointing for us culture vultures!!!

Kelsey- I just ordered this book!! You can get it at this address

tree 1110
Thanks a million for that info! Will try and source it there.
-
No problem, cousin ;D!
-
Hi Tree1110,
how did you manage to source it with the website you mentioned? I checked it out as would be interested in getting a second copy of the book if available; but there is only the contact link on the website. I did email them; but they are asking for an ISBN. i don't think the book has an ISBN number but I will check it again. If there is no ISBN number how did you manage to get a copy?
Many thanks
Gerard
PS Michael Fitzpatrick is giving a talk on the 20th April in Gorey as part of the North Wexford Historical Society!
-
Hi tree1110/lochgarman,
Have run up against the same problem with the website!
p.s. where is talk in Gorey and what is the topic???
-
Hi kelsey 64,
About the talk - and the subject not sure yet what the topic will be. It may be mentioned on the facebook page of North Wexford Historical Society, so see if you can find them on it and join as a friend. I am sure it will be mentioned in the Guardian Newspaper over the next few weeks as well. I was at a talk the other night and they just mentioned it. THe talk should be in Gorey Library me thinks.
If you find out anymore about the book sourcing let me know. I would like to get a spare copy too. I will recheck about the ISBN number but am pretty sure there is not one on the book which is strange.

I just went through all of my emails and found this ...
Their email: paperback-us[at]paperbackshop.co.uk
And this item associated with the book#...9781151021939 History of the Irish Insurrection of 1798
Hope this helps. I am bummed that I will be in Ireland on the 28th of April and will miss seeing him talk. I'll have to see if they have any info on how to contact him. Trina
Moderator Note - replace [at] with @
-
Ok. Mystery solved then - the ISBN book number you quoted refers to Edward Hay: A History of the Insurrection 1798.
Trina - i am happy to bring along your query to the talk and give it to Michael. If you want PM me the note/message and your email address and I can hand it to Michael. Michael is old school historian so not sure if he has an email or prefers to write old fashioned letters. I can't guarantee if he will reply though!!
Everytime he meets me he always says "you have the local history bug from your behan ancestors"....
He is thinking of writing another book so I am going to give him some of my old photos I have collected that night so maybe he will include them if he does a new book.
(hopefully I get home to Gorey) for that friday night or that they don't change the date to during the week!!
