Title: Birth Certificates reference checking?
Post by: jillynetter on Monday 06 October 08 01:28 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm wondering which is the best way to order birth certificates where there are a few of which I'm not sure is the right one though I know the fathers name is Joseph Armstrong.

With GRO I have to pay £3 for each reference they check, and there are around 10 to check in districts all over Cumberland.

I did wonder if each register office do this where you only purchase the certificate if the babys father is the right one, I dought they'll do that but perhaps for a fee?

Just looking for the cheapes way, any ideas welcome.
Thankyou

Generally if you write to the local register office they will check details free of charge and return your money if it is the wrong one.   Still costs £7.   Some, but not all, take credit cards.   Cheques payable to Superintendant Registrar I think - but no doubt you can check that on their web sites. They do not need the GRO reference - just approximate date and any other useful information.

Thankyou Andrea I'll do that, it beats paying £3 for each check.

it beats paying £30 for each one

I'm not sure what you mean by 30 pound for each one? If you have several possibilities and you order from the GRO you order them one at a time so to get to that amount you would have to be very unlucky. Is there anyway of narrowing down the possibilities? Perhaps if you put up what details you have someone might be able to narrow down the possibilities.
