Hi,
I was wondering if you could look up for Baptisms, John Andrew Meek in about 1810 the family were living in Covent Garden in Bow Street, Westminster in 1826. I'm guessing he was born in London as there are quite a few Meek in the area. Also a look-up for Marrriage for his parents some time before this, fathers name is Thomas and pretty sure mother is Margaret.
Thankyou

There are no Thomas Meek/Meeke/Meake marriages to a Margaret on Pallots marriage index.
Pallots baptism index which once contained 12 million entries was severely damaged during the Second World War and all that remains is about 200,000 entries covering only 22 London parishes so a lot less than found on the IGI.
London's history is one of constant arrivals of people hoping for a better life drawn in by the magnet that was the capital city, from the surrounding counties, further afield and abroad.
What evidence do you have for John Andrew Meek being London born? Have you found him on a later census?

Thankyou Valda for doing this lookup for me. The information I have on John Andrew Meek is from the Old Bailey site, he was transported in 1826 and he was living in Bow Street Westminster at the time. I will need to look up perhaps for his marriage certificate in Australia, that might give me some more information. I have only recently learnt about this side of the family and have just begun my researching the Meek line.
Thankyou again and Best Wishes

If the information was known, his parents should be named on his death certificate. This seems to be his date of death given in one family tree on the web
3rd October 1880 in Ararat, Victoria
Early Australian marriages may not give you the further information you are interested in about John's parentage.

I checked the indexes yesterday and it shows John's parents as unknown. I have found his marriage to his first wife in 1841 Maitland NSW and then in another church to the same women in 1846. I don't know if these records would give me his parents names or if the early Australian records just give the basics. Do you know?
Thankyou

1788-1855 New South Wales marriage certifcates are 'Registry transcriptions of the Early Church Records', civil registration beginning in 1856.

Thankyou for this look up. The father Thomas sounds right but he was a Tailor, not a sailor. Could it be Tailor?
Thanks so much

The above baptism was from dockland ancestors collection on findmypast, so I would imagine the transcriptions are accurate.

I've just read all the messages and I think I have some additional information from my family tree.
I have a Thomas Meek, born 29 Sept 1782 in York, Yorkshire, who married Frances Henderson (b. circa 1782 London) in London . Thomas Meek was a tailor as per the 1841 & 1851 England census.
I am aware of 2 children from Thomas & Frances:
Sarah Ann Rayson Meek (my relative) b. about 1819 Middle St Georges, London
Frances Meek (female) b. about 1821 London.
It appears that John Andrew Meek could be an older brother although the location in London doesn't seem quite right?
Sarah Ann Rayson Meek married Alexander Body in June 1839 in St Georges London, and emigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1857.

Since my last post in May 2010, I have found another brother of my relative Sarah Ann Meek.
John Meek was born 11 April 1811 in London and christened 11 Oct 1812 in Stepney (I've assumed that he is the same person to one listed below). He died on 4 March 1870 in Collingwood, Melbourne, 60 years old. He emigrated to Australia about 1856 possibly with his wife Ellen and their 2 eldest surviving children at that time, being Ellen and Richard. There next 2 children Fanny and Alfred emigrated together later in 1864. John Meek was a baker.
It might be that John's father was in fact a sailor, as it is unclear on the death certificate if it is tailor or sailor. Hope this makes sense.
I think the John Meek I am related to is not the same John Meek referred to by Valda.

Hi Hirdy,
Sorry I have only just found your posts. This will be helpful because it will help to eliminate at least this John Meek from my John Meek. Still searching for mine. Thank you for your post. Sorry to take so long to reply.

Excuse all my posts before this one regarding the parentage of John Andrew Meek and his address. The father of John Andrew Meek is William Meek and his mother's name is Ann. There address in 1827 was 34 Cock Lane, Snow Hill. In 1841 & 1851 William & Ann Meek are living at 3 Green Arbour Court, St Sephulchre, Middlesex. Father William Meek was at the Battle of Waterloo.
