Having struggled with my Belton Burns family I am now settling on trying to look at old
street maps - but not sure where Flora St in 1861 would be classed as - on the census
in 1861 it shows Hulme, Medlock St Mark. Does anyone know which map i should
try and buy ??
thanks mariam

The 1857 map of Manchester has already been posted on RootsChat and I have it on my "favourites". The link is:

Medlock Street runs from Stretford Road thro' to City road. Good luck!

If you did want to splash out on a map, Flora St is on Godfrey map "Manchester Large Scale" No. 38, Hulme (1844) or "Lancashire Sheet 104.10" Manchester SW, 1894.
It was near the Knott Mill Iron works and Great Jackson St.

A bit of a grey "moment" there. The posting to RC was made by our old friend Orinoco on the 17th. May 2008. The correct website is:

Thanks for that. I did see this later link just after the first effort.
I was looking for Back Preston Street, Hulme, Manchester, which is given as the address of one of my ancestors. I remember Preston Street itself, which was a major highway in Hulme which actually carried tramcars back in the day, but there is no trace of Back Preston Street, which I thought would have been a small side street off the main one.

Tom. Some of the smaller street names are not included on the maps, but I am gradually updating them (currently Manchester 1930) in order to include these streets where possible, and I am also updating the text, as it can be almost illegible in a lot of instances. If I locate your street in the meantime, I will let you know.

Thanks for that mate. Best of luck with your work on the maps.
My mum is 93 and grew up in Hulme and Stretford, living in Bold Street, Pine Street, Tamworth Street, etc. Sadly she also has no recollection of Back Preston Street.
If you look at the images of Bold Street on the Manchester Libraries site, there is one showing a plate indicating the boundary between Hulme and Stretford where Bold Street changes to Lever Street. My mum lived close to this boundary marker.

Sadly...none of the Links seem to work anymore:-(
I've tried them all...to no avail.

Hi Guys
Can any one help am looking for Scotland Close Manchester around the 1861 period,
cheers
-
Are you sure it was Scotland "Close" and not Scotland Court ?
If it was Scotland Court it was just above Victoria Station.
www.old-maps.co.uk
type in the coordinate boxes 384137 and 399220 and press go.
Select the 1891 town plan from the right hand side selection.
Zoom in.

There's a better map here - http://enriqueta.man.ac.uk/luna/servlet/view/search;jsessionid=E22D13727DF72762CE6B00B7CD10BEE8?search=Search&q=1056+manchester+and+salford&QuickSearchA=QuickSearchA&pgs=50&res=1&sort=Reference_Number%2CReference_Number%2CReference_Number%2CPage (http://enriqueta.man.ac.uk/luna/servlet/view/search;jsessionid=E22D13727DF72762CE6B00B7CD10BEE8?search=Search&q=1056+manchester+and+salford&QuickSearchA=QuickSearchA&pgs=50&res=1&sort=Reference_Number%2CReference_Number%2CReference_Number%2CPage)
... although its shown as Scotland "Fold".
You need to put together numbers 17 and 23 for it to make as much sense as the Old Maps version. No.23 is particularly interesting as it shows the full internal layout of the nearby workehouse.
