Hello
Has anyone out there come across any members of the WEBBER Family in Barnstaple (or the local surrounding area).
My 3xGt Grandmother was Maria WEBBER, a daughter of William WEBBER and was born circa 1818 at Barnstaple.
I know nothing more of her other than her marriage to William LEE in 1839 in Liverpool where the Family settled.
If anyone can shed any light on her Baptism or the WEBBER Family I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Graham, I lived in the village of Dolton, North Devon for several years, about 14 miles from Barnstaple, there was a family named Webber (farmers) at that time in the village, I knew them well, if you go to the Dolton website www.dolton.org.uk you will find members of the Webber family in the school photographs dated 1937. and entries in their guestbook.
Bill.

Hi Graham
I've checked the various transcripts of local PRs that are held in North Devon RO. I couldn't find any Webber baptisms around the right date - nor were there any in Pilton (essentially a suburb of Barnstaple). In Bishops Tawton however I found the following:
Aug 21 1814 John son of William & Mary Webber (labourer)
Mar 4 1818 Ann d of William & Mary (farmer)
Apr 28 1819 MARY d of William & Mary (farmer)
May 18 1820 James s of William & Mary
Nov 29 1820 Elizabeth d of William & Mary
Jul 1823 Samuel s of William & Mary (coachman)
Jun 11 1828 Mary d William & Mary
As you can see, William's occupation varies. I checked the burial register & couldn't find a Mary between 1819 & 1828, so possibly the eldest could be Maria. There wasn't a suitable marriage in the parish either. Bishops Tawton is very close to Barnstaple - parts of the Parish would lie closer to Barnstaple town centre than to the village itself.

Hi Steve
I have been following the Webber's from your posting ...
In 1851:
I have found Mary Webber, 31 unm dressmaker b Bishops Tawton with her sister Ann, 32 also a dressmaker b B Tawton.
these two seem to add up to the baptisms you found:
Mar 4 1818 Ann d of William & Mary (farmer)
Apr 28 1819 MARY d of William & Mary (farmer)

Thanks Deb
That seems to rule out this family then

Married Robert Scamp, a taylor of Barnestaple. know nothing yet of her extended family or siblings. Anne had three sons and a daughter born in 1840's. its another webber in the barnestaple area anyway. maybe when we both get more info will see if there's a link

FindMyPast Marriage record 2 July 1839 living at 36 Portland Street Liverpool gives Maria’s father as William a Labourer
She might be
Maria Webber B 22 Feb 1818 to William Webber a labourer & his wife Sarah in East Budleigh which is East Devon
I expect you have this but just in case
