Title: Cemeteries in Selby?
Post by: simonsez on Thursday 02 October 08 19:47 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to locate info and location of burial for the following person in my family tree:

James WRAY was born about 1836 in Preston, Lancs.  He was baptised on 14 Feb 1836 in Preston, Lancs.  Christened at St John Preston.  He died in 1906.  Death registered Selby 2Q 1906, aged 70

I live in the US so its not so easy getting the info without going through the government registrars office besides i dont know where he is buried.

Thanks

The burial is on

James Wray age 70  flax dresser died at Park Row, Selby
buried 9 June 1906 Selby Cemetery  Plot ref: 4077.
Minister BM Rowland.

I remembered Selby burials were on FHO from finding a couple of my ancestors buried there.

Jill,

Thanks again for your help but i was wondering if the Eliza Wray above who died 16 years later is buried in selby as doing the search on FHO yielded no results?  Its weird that her death is registered in houghton and not selby.  She must have either moved after her husbands death or there was a falling out?  It could be possible that her death was in houghton but she was buried in selby.

Cheers

Itch,

I would greatly appreciate it ;), Would definitely answer whether his wife Eliza was buried with him.  This site has helped me more with my genealogy questions in the last 3 months than i have gotten in 7 years on another well known site.

Please let me know what you find and if its not too much to ask for a picture i would be very grateful ;D

Cheers

Thank you, i cant think of anything  else as  this is the only burial plot location that i have had confirmed so far. The person you are looking for has his father buried in bramham. Here is hs details but i dont know where in bramham nor how far is it from  selby? I have only been to wetherby and york.  Is clifford cum boston near you?

James WRAY was born about 1805 in Preston, Lancs.  He died in 1863.  Death registered Bramham 1Q 1863.  Surname sometimes Reay in earlier records.

Thanks again.

Hello - Millgate is still there, not sure if Swift's Yard still exists, but I'll have a look and take a picture of either Swifts Yard, or where it used to be!  Not at work tomorrow, so will have a toddle round the cemetery, too ;)

looking on google maps i never knew that wetherby was in the vicinity to selby, clifford and bramham .  My uncle and family lived there for a few years before mving up to jedburgh scotland. I miss the yorkshire dales and the surrounding countryside and hopefully i can bring my girls over someday to experience it.

Cheers  ;D

Still hunting in the cemetery, but have managed to find out more about Swifts Yard.
Sadly it's no longer there.  Millgate, is an old street of terraced houses, with a couple of smaller streets off it.  Swifts Yard was one of these, and served a local builder [Squire Swift] It's now home to a modern residential home facility, and sheltered bungalows.  This is the entrance to what used to be Swifts Yard  (http://pic90.picturetrail.com:80/VOL2185/2539614/8325106/344179784.jpg)
and this is the exterior of the home which has been built on the site

Hi Jacky,

Forgive my ignorance but I was wondering if you know if the selby cemetary is still being used and if so is their a way to contact someone there?

again i dont want to sound pushy or impatient as i REALLY appreciate the offer to look into this and all the effort required. i wish i could return the favor but i dont think you have any ancestors to look up in southern california do you? haha ;D

take care

Yes, Selby cemetery is stilll being used, and I visit there most weeks.  The workers there have all the records on computer, if there's anyone you want me to look for for you  ;D  [still no sign of the Wray, but a lot of the older ones are illegible now]

No joy with James Wray I'm afraid - can't see any sign of him - is he definitely buried in Selby? Bramham is in West Yorkshire, near Leeds; just wondered if hi might have been buried closer to where he died?
