I have traced my family back to William Etherington (born 1794) a Carpenter and later a Builder by trade and his wife Mary (born 1795). They were living in Midhurst, West Sussex from about 1816 until at least 1850 when they moved to Carnaby Street in London.
Etherington is a common name around the Midhurst area of West Sussex so I believe William was probably born in that neighbourhood. I have searched the parish records for Midhurst, the LDS Vital Records, the 1881 Census and the Ancestry.com English Parish Records for Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex (although none of these cover Midhurst). I have been told of a connection with Fernhurst but have yet to prove it.
Can anyone help? I know there were a lot of William Etheringtons so it may help to know that I am sure all of my dates and names are correct. ???

Hi brice01
Have just looked in the 10 volumes of:
'The Universal British Directory 1793 - 1798' for your Etherington Family in Midhurst, but unfortunately without success.
Although it listed Gentry, Clergy, Law, and Tradrs - Etherington is not a name that appears in any list
Checked for Fernhurst - but it does not appear in the Directory
Sorry

Have a look at some of the surrounding villages - there were Etheringtons in Fittleworth until quite recently.

Is that an order or a request?

Chris and Sue thanks so much for your prompt replies. I will bear Fittleworth in mind because I have never heard it suggested before. I shall also try to get records for Fernhurst and Yateley as they are possibles also. Unfortunately, living in Scotland and working full time, it is not easy for me to get access to records in Sussex so I am at the mercy of the parish records transcription society. But thank you anyway for trying!

:-[ Oh Dear - I do apologise, my post does sound rather rude, it was meant to be a suggestion to Brice... Sorry !!
There are still one or two Etheringtons listed in the phone book for Fittleworth and Petworth
Sorry !!

Hi to Suey and Brice01
Suey - thats OK ;D ;D
Brice - Fernhurst, Yateley, Fittleworth and Petworth do not appear in the Universal British Directory 1793 - 1798.
Quote from introduction:
"The main value of the directory is that it provides information on towns and villages thirty years before the first major county directories appeared. Of course, the lists of principal inhabitants represent only a tiny percentage of the population"
Sorry

Brice,
My great-great grandfather was also a William Etherington. He was born abt. 1791 in Farnhurst, West Sussex. One of his children Samuel John Etherington was my grandfather (married to Martha Stevens). There were many Etheringtons born in Farnhurst (notice the different spelling). Also North Ambershaw/Ambersham, Lodsworth, and Hazelmere. But the most prevalent place seems to be LURGASHALL, Sussex.
Many Etheringtons were born there and some still live there today. Someone who may be able to help you is ***email address removed to stop spamming . He has a lot of Etherington information AND may be able to help you find your William.
***You could send the email address via PM. - Moderator

Hello - I'm new to RootsChat - it came up when I put Etherington into Google. My great great grandmother was Jane Etherington born in Lurgashall in 1820. I think her father was William Etherington. She married Henry Steele. She died in 1886 and is buried in Milford churchyard.
I'd be fascinated to know whether she is in your family tree also.
many thanks
Geoff Farrell

Hello,
I'm new to this and I know the last post was a long time ago, but I'm a member of the Etherington family from Lurgashall. My Great grandfather James Keith Etherington was born around 1910, however his older sister, Mabel Rose was born 1900.
Anyway I was wondering if I could have any help finding family members. I know from asking around in my family we have roots in Lancashire, but mainly in Lurgashall, and the Midhurst area. Most of the Etheringtons still live in Sussex, and its a very big family. I'd appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks,
Ali

Hello - I had my first post last October - good to have a follow up. My gg grandmother was Jane Etherington born 1820. She had a sister Harriet born 1822 and a brother William born 1824. She became a Steele by marriage and is buried, alongside her husband, in Milford churchyard. So -if you have either Harriet or William in your history, then you and are related. all best Geoff

Oh - forgot to say - I got a lot of information by looking at the parish records for Lurgashall that are kept at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester. Easy for me because I live nearby but worth a visit if you can. Geoff

Hi Geoff,
Thank you for such a quick reply. I may have to go a check the West Sussex Record office, when I'm next down in Sussex. All I know from talking to family members is that the members of the Etherington family in Lurgashall are my cousins, Aunties, uncles, and great Grandparents. It would be nice to know if I have found someone I am related to.
I do know that two of my cousins Percy, and Arthur fought in the Battle of Loos in the WW1, and they are commemorated at the memorial in France. I am still an Etherington, and we are mainly based down in Sussex still, around, Burwash, E. Grinstead area.
I'll keep doing some research, and maybe i'll find Harriet is a long lost relative of mine.
Thank you again.

Hi Ali - me again. There is a John Etherington who is the current Chairman of Midhurst Town Council. His name pops up in the local press quite often. Because my link to the Etheringtons is so small, I've not got in touch with him. But you have a stronger reason I'd have thought.

Hey Geoff,
I do not know this John Etherington you speak of, however he could be a far off relation. My great grandfather James Etherington b.1915 moved to turners hill, and resided in Uckfield where my grandfather was born. I've always heard stories about my family from lurgashall, and the graveyard at the church which is home to a lot of James Etheringtons are my relations. After my grandfather passed away in 2004 I decided that I should really start a family tree because no one in my family has one of the Etherington side.
I have reson to believe that my Great grandfathers dad was called Arthur but I still have this yet to prove, probably over the next few months I might take a trip to Lurgashall, and look at the parish records and hopefully I will find the thing I'm looking for.
If I were you I would take a trip to lurgashall and see if you can find anything out about Harriets family. I do know that the clergy of that area did their own census to see who was currently living there. If you manged to do this I would love to hear how you got on, because it'd be fascinating to know if we were related or not.
