What was the surname of the 5 sisters, also their parents names. And we may be able to work something out.
Start by writing everything down with dates and places into a tree programme.
Legacy might be a good free one to start you off http://genealogy.about.com/od/free_software/Free_Genealogy_Software_Utilities.htm

Do you want to work back in time, that is - build a family tree? Or do you want to try and connect with more recent family?

You will need Mary Jane Morris and Eric Matthews marriage certificate.
This will give you their ages and the names of their fathers.
Then you will have to find the marriage of xxxxxxx Morris and the mother of Mary Jane.
Does your mother know what year and where her parents married? We may be able to look it up.
Does you mother know when her mother was born, the year?
Mary Jane and Morris are very common names, hard to pin down without some other clue.
Gwyneth, was she born in 1926 or another year?
Was her mother aged 26 when she died in 1926?
-
mary jane morris born 1911 on october 13 th not sure where but she said she came from tonyrefail her mother died in 1926 just after gwyneth was born my mum thinks that mj and eric marrried in ebbow vale at a registry office they lived in tuthcluin (probally the wrong spelling )no idea of th eyear or of how old they were i know mj was younf when she mwt eric she was working with her sister dora in a nursing home in porthcawl she went to work there aged 15 to 16 or so we bwlieve and was very good freinds with the matron there they were welsh baptist welsh speaking mary j,s mother and her mother before that are buried i tonyrefail possibly ainons

Tonyrefail is registered in Pontypridd, (sub district Llantrisaint)
A birth shows up in the right quarter
Dec 1911 / district Pontypridd /vol 11a /page 1190
Mary J Morris - mother's maiden name Davies
The birth certificate would show the exact date, and the names of the parents.
I don't know if it is your Mary J, without something (just a little more) to go on.
But it is the only Mary J Morris showing up anywhere for the year and quarter.
If you got this birth certificate (from here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ ) and it has the right day/date of birth, you would have the parents' names, and the mother's maiden name.

There is a marriage
June 1927 district Cardiff/ vol 11a/ page 697
Harry C Morris to Winifred J King
Only trouble is I can't find a child born in subsequent years in that area for surname Morris, mother's maiden name King. But may not be in freebmd just yet. You would need to go through the full indexes.
Also can't find a Harry/Henry Morris marriage to Davies in Glamorgan in relevant years.
And I can't find a Harry/Henry Morris death 1937 through to 1941.
-
Interesting births with Pontypridd registration, surname Morris all with mmn Davies
Dec 1911 Mary J
June 1913 Dora M
Dec 1914 Ruth
Dec 1919 Megan
Mar 1925 Gwyneth
(can be checked on freebmd - http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl )
But still cannot link them without just a little more information. Certs are £7 each.
Can't find Harry Morris marriage to Davies around about these years.

It's best to be cautious with memories. They aren't accurate most of the time.
You need at least one document to get going.
Here is the death of Mary Jane Matthews according to her birth date
July 2001 Bristol Gloucestershire
Mary Jane Matthews aged 89 born 13th October 1911.
This one won't help much at all, but I put it up for the date of death.
Do you think it is her?
-
and here is the marriage of Mary J Morris to Eric C K Matthews
Sept quarter 1936, district Bedwellty, vol 11a, page 246
This would give the name of Mary Jane's father
order from here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
cost £7
register
page one, fill in and page down to answer YES you have General Register Office Index, which is the name, year, quarter, district, volume, page
page two, delivery details
page three, just fill in the red-starred bits only
It may also be worth the £7 to order this as well - birth of Mary J Morris
Dec quarter 1911 / district Pontypridd /vol 11a /page 1190
Mary J Morris - mother's maiden name Davies
I know I would. Let us know the results!! 8)
-
thank you so much my mums memory isnt the best shall definatly order a birth certificate my mum said this moring she was guessing when mj s father she never met him im very gratefull for your help louise xxx certainly shall let u know how i get on
-
You could do with getting the marriage cert of Mary Jane to Eric Matthews - as well as the birth cert, in order to tie them together with the name of the father.
Otherwise you have no link.
-
my mum has mentioned an uncle shinkin possibly mary janes mothers brother ? or her fathers brother ?morris who lived in tonyrefail as well dora
what name do you think this might mean?
-
im really not sure thats how my mother remembers her mother saying it she repeated it in a heavy welsh accent possibly jenkin??? she talked about him alot shinkin is actually a wesh surname from the flemish coming in to south wales from the low country sometimes changed to jenkins
-
Just clearing up my old paperwork and came across some notes for this -
There are five sisters (copied from message on page one of this thread)
Interesting births with Pontypridd registration, surname Morris all with mmn Davies
Dec 1911 Mary Jane <<<<<
June 1913 Dora M
Dec 1914 Ruth
Dec 1919 Megan
Mar 1925 Gwyneth
You say the mother of Mary Jane died aged 26 after giving birth to Gwyneth. But she must have been a bit older than 26 with having Mary Jane in 1911.
Gwyneth was brought up by her aunt (her mother's sister) Martha after her mother died.
There was an uncle 'Shinkin' Jenkin (her mother's brother, and also brother to Martha.)
So I had this family in my notes which looks interesting.
1901 census RG13/5008/23/37 - 8 Penshwfer Rd (looks like), Tonyrefail
Benjamin Davies 48 coal miner born Llantrisant
Mary 46 b Ystradyfodwg
Catherine 18
Jenkin 16 coal hewer
Mary Ann 14
Richard 12
Martha 9 (the sister ?)
Ruth 5
[registration dist Pontypridd, sub reg dist Llantrisant]
-
Did you ever get the birth certificateof Mary Jane? You really need it
Dec 1911 / district Pontypridd /vol 11a /page 1190
Mary J Morris - mother's maiden name Davies
There was a marriage in 1909 Pontypridd of a Mary Ann Davies to a Thomas Morris, but nothing can be really sure unless you have Mary Jane's birth cert.
Ther is a marriage for a Mary Jane Morris to Eric C K Mathews in 1936, so she wasn't really that young getting married, aged 25. (if this is her)
There is a marriage in 1917 Pontypridd of a Martha Davies to an Arthur Huxton.
