Hi all
I am looking for information on Finlay McIntosh born 8 January 1901 in Inverness and moved to Australia in 1926. Father was James McIntosh and mother was Euphemia Vass. I think this information is correct on parents. Finlay was my Grandfather, I have no information about his family or why he moved to Australia.
Thanks

This looks a likely entry for Finlay in the 1901 census with the names you have:
James MacIntosh 27, Cattleman On Farm, Hunlly (?spl), Aberdeenshire
Euphemia MacIntosh 28, b. Nigg, Rossshire
James A MacIntosh 3, Fearn, Rossshire
Alexander MacIntosh 1, b. Kiltearn, Rossshire
Finlay MacIntosh 2 months, b. Kiltearn, Rossshire
Address: Ploughmans Cottage, Kiltearn, Ross & Cromarty
To give you an idea on counties and parishes within counties, have a look at:

Hi and welcome to Rootschat :)
The Scotland's People site have Euphemia and James marrying in Nigg, Ross and Cromarty in 1897. You can view and download the image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It will cost 6 credits (£1.20)

Hi
I've managed to trace the family back to 2 generations then there is nothing.
The surnames that have come up are:
Watt
Gordon
Cruickshank
Vass
I have got some birth, marriage and death dates, could someone please let me know what is the best way to go forward from here.
Thanks
-
Hi :)
Is that two generation back from James and Euphemia?
It would very much depend on the dates. The marriage cert that I found in the message above would give you both their parents names (from Scotlands People) and tracing these parents' deaths would probably give you their parents names or the IGI (www.familysearch.org ) might give information.
However, I'm not sure from your lastmessage which generationthat you're referring to :-\
Tell us what you have - full names, locations and dates and we will probably be able to help further :)

Hi Mcaussie
I'm not sure where you obtained you information but it looks as if it was from BMDs (statuatory registration certs) and OPRs (Old Parish Records). Official (Statuatory) Registration began in Scotland in 1855 and certificates can be obtained via www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
Before that, we are reliant on the OPRs, which are the registers of the Church of Scotland, and Monumental Inscriptions. Other sources are Wills and Kirk Sessions Records. All but the Kirk Sessions and the MIs are also on the Scotlands People site.
This thread gives you more information:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html
Living relatives can be traced but are more difficult. There was a recent thread on this but I can't find it at the moment :-\ I'll try more detailed searches and put the link up for you.
Please note that its Rootschat's policy not to post the names of living people:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,260815.0.html
Photographs - that's more difficult - do you mean photos of people or the places?

Hi Gadget
I got my information at a website called www.familysearch.org, the details were all ready on there. I think it had a name and address of the person who gave this information, I will try and contact them and see what else they know.
Thanks a lot for all your help so far.

Hi Finlay McIntosh was my Father. The information re dates and marriage you have all seems correct. My understanding as to why he left Scotland was to search for work as things were hard in Scotland at the time. I know he travelled to Australia by boat and disembarked in Freemantle. Not sure of dates and movements until he got to Kalgoolie and married my Mother Jean Bursill on December 7 1935. They had 7 children and obviously one of those is your Father.
Love to hear from you

Hi aunty Beryl
It's great to hear from you. I have done a bit of research on the McIntosh family.
I would love to send you all the information that I have. Mum has said that you have met some of the relations in Scotland, I would be grateful if you have some info on them for me.
So sad about the earthquake in Christchurch, hope that you are all well.
Carol
ps my Father is Sydney (as I'm sure you know all ready) ;)

Hi there,
I noticed this thread mentioned a Euphemia Vass.
My husband's grandmother was Davidina Vass. I just found out this week from another cousin that two of Davidina's sisters were called Euphemia and Jessie.
We knew that Davidina's family lived around Balintore area and have some family photo's, fishing was the main source of income. Does this sound familiar to any of you.?
Love to hear from anyone
-
I haven't yet gone that far back into Euphemina's family but they might be relations of mine.
-
We haven't gone back with Davidina either.
I don't think the IGI have the full records online. Any preliminary research I have done does not "jive" completely with the family information past down to me.
Thanks
