Welcome to Rootschat Andrea.
I've just split off your topic and re-named it and it will shortly be moved to Co. Down board so that people with local knowledge will see it.
Unfortunately, civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriage started in 1964 (from 1845 for other marriages) so you need to search for other sources like church records (if they exist).
Meanwhile, this is a fantastic Co. Down site you might want to explore:

Hello Andrea,
It can be hard to tell with families from the province of Ulster whether they were Irish or Scots. There was a large amount of coming and going between the north of Ireland and Scotland. There would be no harm in looking at Scotland's People too. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
You'll also have to consider a number of spelling variations.
This site www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname gives the following message "Sorry, we currently have no information on that surname in our databases. Try another name,
or a different spelling."

Thanks. I use Scotlandspeople a lot and I am a member of the Dumfries and Galloway FHS. My original message was more in the way of offering help to someone looking for McGauchies. There are a good few in Dumfries. There are some rather weird spellings of it though as my family were all illiterate at that time, and combined with the accent, a little lateral thinking is needed. Hi Andrea,
One of my ancestors from Dumfries is Joseph McGauchie, 1825 - 1900, son of John McGauchie and Helen Smith. Originally from County Down. I have gathered some information about Joseph, and have a photo somewhere of Joseph's daughter Agnes in old age.
Would like to find out more information about Joseph, and also about John McGauchie and where in County Down the family came from.
I would be interested in any information you have about this.

Hi Iain. Didn't get any further with the Irish connection, but did find McGauchies in Dumfries in the 18th centuary. There is an Andrew McG that was a covenanter. I hope to look into this more soon.
I would love a photo of Agnes. Recently I had an article about Diana McGauchie or Crosby (elder sister of Agnes) printed in the Dumfries and Galloway FHS news letter. She had a very hard life. I can let you have a copy of this if you are interested.
Do you live in Scotland? I see you spell your first name the proper scottish way!

Hi Andrea,
Good to hear from you!
I am living in Kuwait. My father was born and grew up in Dumfries, hence the correct spelling of my name! He and Mum moved to London before I was born. We still have relatives in Dumfries.
Yes I would be very interested to see your article about Diana McGauchie, please. I didn't know about Diana.
The photo of Agnes is with my papers in the UK, unfortunately. I will send it to you next time I go home, in the autumn. It was sent to me by a relative in Dumfries who was also tracing her family history, and who found me through one of these notice boards!

I haven't used this chat for a while. I don't particularly want to Diana's story for general viewing and you will see why when you read it. So how do I make this private? Andrea

Hi,
My Ggranny was the Agnes Layden maiden name McGauchie her father was Joesph McGauchie his father was John and mother Helen. My Agnes had not had a very happy life just like her sister Diana. I would be interested to find out more about her sisters life and swap information. The McGauchie family were a very poor family and Joesph died in the poorhouse in Dumfries. I would love Iain Layden to get in contact lovely to swap information again, I lost contact with you. If Andrea is reading this message please get in touch too we could swap information. I also have a picture of Agnes I can pass on. :-*
Kind regards

as your query started out and had an entry put on the Co Down board, Aghadowey mentioned Ros Davies Co Down board, one of my favourites. I looked again today at Ros davies and was struck that she had no McGauchie at all, and sounded out to myself the name and found myself looking at her McGaughey and Megaughey entries in Comber civil parish and Knockbreda civil parish and a little wider nevertheless a couple of pocket areas. One of her earliest listings is William MEGAUGHEY . Comber of Magherascouse; aged 26, attended Magherascouse School in 1824 MSch p6. I produced a historical directory of Comber some years ago, its about 30 mgs in size downloadable from Comber historical Society website, but my work is already dated and Ros gives more uptodate information. You might find my information on Magherascouse useful perhaps. You should try contacting the Comber historical Society itself. Good luck onwards JimG
