Title: Marriage Search SCAMMEL/JACKMAN
Post by: Sylvie on Tuesday 30 September 08 19:42 BST (UK)
I am looking for the marriage record of Louisa Scammel and William Jackman.
I believe both were born in 1808 in Tidworth, Wilts.
I have daughter Ellen Jackman born 1849 in Tidworth.
I have this family on the 1841 and 1851 census but just can't trace their marriage....can anyone please help me?

Hi

The 1851 image shows William b Hampshire but then the enumerator has just "dittoed Tidworth from previous entries

I checked the 1861 and that also shows William b Tidworth Hampshire

If you check the 1841 - they were living in Hampshire and eldest daughter was 9 so marriage 1830-1832.  William is shown as born in Hampshire but Louisa and 2 eldest children are shown as not born Hampshire

Hi Patrish

I know - I also checked the Vital Records index but nothing listed there either so looks like  it's down to any local transcriptions that may be available

Thank you for helping me....
The first child I believe was Louisa who was born in 1832, so the marriage record would come under Parish Records, I've searched on the IGI but come up blank.

i have son William Henry Jackman's birth certificate for 1st July 1837 that mentions father William Jackman and mother Louisa Scamell. But like you I've been unable to find any mention of a marriage.

Hi Kenby, welcome to Rootschat,  :)

Unfortunately even if it says on a childs birth certificate, "mother formally" that does not indicate that a legal marriage actually took place.  :(

North Tidworth Marriage Transcripts.

Transcription error perhaps, could be the marriage.

6 Sept 1828. William Jackson. Off Parish. Louisa Scamel. Spinster Of Parish. North Tidworth.

Hope this helps.

West.

It sounds very plausible considering their first child Louisa Ann Jackman was born in North Tidworth four years later in 1832. Thanks very much, you've helped resolve a long time blockage in my family tree.

When the William Henry (mentioned in my first post) married his name was misspelt as Yackman! It took me ages to find his marriage certificate too.

Being new to Parish records, I wonder was there any mention of either William or Louisa's parents' names in their marriage record?

Unfortunately pre 1837 marriages did not give Parents names nor any occupations.

Just the information West had already given you but usually there are witnesses which could be close relatives.
