I think the answer to this question is probably no, but I just wondered if there is any way of finding out if someone had brothers and sisters? If there were any then I know it would be post 1901, so there's nothing to find in the census. I have both parents info and 1 son, but would like to know if there were any other children as I would have thought that 1 child back in the 20/30's was unheard of? But perhaps that was just the way this family had it.
The only help I have so far which is leading me to believe there probably wasn't any is that the parents and the son are buried together with the sons wife. But I guess if there had been other children then they may have been buried elsewhere with their own family.

Hello,
You may find more children by using the surname/mother's maiden surname feature on SP. However, it'll only pick up on deaths after 1973. If there were any infant deaths, it may be useful looking for births/deaths in the town that they stayed in that match surname and family names.

I had a look at SP and searched for births with the same surname for the same area as the one I know. I put the dates as the year of marriage to year of death of mother which was only a space of 22 years. It came up with 3 people, born 1927, 1929 and 1931. The 1927 is the one I know, but other than looking at their actual birth certificate I don't know if the other two are connected or not.
I tried the search on deaths with the mothers maiden name and nothing was returned for these 2 names for anywhere in scotland, I only got results when I ticked the box under mother's maiden name, but it's too random to know if it's the same person and if they are related to each other. There is also the chance that they are still alive.
Might have to try another avneue to get to the bottom of this one.
Thanks

Yes,it is possible to find siblings.I have, by looking at school admission rolls. I found a great uncle none of my family knew of!If you know where your relative lived, you can look up the register of pupil admissions. You will also get the child's date of birth, address, name of parent or guardian & best of all, previous schools attended. This is very useful for tracking families between censuses, especially if they were agricultural workers who moved every 6 months. These records are covered by Data Protection Act & some restrictions are in place. What area of Scotland are you interested in?

The area is Ross & Cromarty. Where do you find school rolls from? I had thought it might have been a bit easier for me as the father was a schoolmaster and actually lived with the family in the school house. But I have googled the school a million times and just get information on present day and the odd bit of history, but nothing about people that were linked to the school. The school was Tarradale School, the mother died in 1942 and the grave stone says her husband was school master of tarradale school at that time. And I looked at her death extract and her address was Tarradale Schoolhouse. If there was school records from around 1932 - 1940 then this ought to show them up. I would assume that the children would have gone to the same school that they lived at and they wouldn't have been sent to another school.

Too early for you, but this is what flst was referring to in respect of School admission registers: www.ambaile.org/en/item/item_writtenword.jsp?item_id=8407
You just need to find the right years!

Full details of the Highland Council Archives are to be found here www.highland.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/372C2742-55B5-40F0-B135-63694BA2FCAB/0/archivesguide.pdf

Thanks for your replies and your info. It doesn't look like there is any information for the dates I am looking at.
I think I have looked at that council archive list before, but not found anything that would help me. I'll keep searching.

At the very least, have you tried contacting the school direct to find out where their historical records are kept? I would have thought that given Alexander went on to receive an MBE and became a JP (from your previous posts) they may have some records of him...or point you in the right direction :)
Also, you have a date for Alexander's death. Have you tried checking for any obituaries/notices in the newspapers that may include details of any children?
Unlikely any of this info will be available on line but worth following up.

Yeh I think my problem is that I have been trying to get as much online as I can. I just need to find the time to go into more detail by looking up the old newspapers etc.
Thanks, at least you've given me a few places to look for info.

I see also from your other posts that you have picked up on the death of a William George Fowler, with mother's maiden name REID. His birth is showing I think in the Parish of URRAY, which I believe (you would have to double check!) is the modern Parish name of Muir of Ord and where Tarradale School is located. Other Fowler births showing in Urray between 1920-1940:
1927 William George
1929 Margaret Elizabeth
1931 Helen Margretta
Familiar names within the Fowler/Reid lines but no idea whether they connect to your line unfortunately.

Yeh I found those 3 listings on SP, but like you say there is no way of knowing if they are related, not unless I get the birth certs. The one I do know of is William George (my father), but the other two I have no idea about. I am not in a position to ask about whether he had sisters/brothers, so that's why I was hoping to find it out on my own. Maybe one day i'll just find out!

Keep an eye out here on RootsChat for posts from people who offer to do look ups next time they are visiting New Register House in Edinburgh. They may be able to assist you by looking these births up. In the meantime, I would start by emailing the school - you may well find a friendly soul in the school office who could help :)
