Hi,
Can anyone find a parish birth/baptism record for :
16 Dec, 1849 St Phillip & Jacob, Bristol – Henry J Swaffield. I am keen to find out who his parents were.
Kind regards

Richard,
Isn't it a shame that the LDS do not allow the root sources of submissions to be given in the IGI?
Regarding your request about Henry John Swaffield's christening which, I surmise, was found as a submitted entry in the IGI. Think about the fact that the LDS submitter did not give HJS's parents' names yet the date is very specific. Why is that? If the christening record had been found in a church register against the given date, surely at least one parent's name would have been given? That makes me think that the entry may be a fairy tale or at least a part may be.
The LDS use various methods in arriving at unverified dates and places. From a church marriage record, guesses of the couple's "about" birth dates are arrived at (-21yrs for the bride and - 25yrs for the groom) Similarly, "about" marriage dates can be guessed from the age of the eldest child given in a census (- 1yr from birth year). Place of birth - same as marriage place might be given.
Extreme scepticism is needed when dealing with submitted IGI entries and you seem to be doing just that. The important thing to the LDS is that the person lived or is honestly thought to have lived. There is no intentional subterfuge on their part for dates and places are not very important to them and the IGI is for their use primarily.
But of course, the submitted entry might be the actual truth :)

It's not unusual to be baptised years after birth and in a different area.
The 1841 Census for Axminster Devon (Ref HO/107/200/8) has a Henry aged 10 months with parents Isaac (age 30 - Tailor - not born in Devon) and Mary, age 30. Could this be the family - it's not too far from Bristol? ???
If it is a possibility then FreeBMD lists a birth entry for Henry John Swaffield in 1840 Q2 Axminster Vol 10 Page 3 that will enable you to obtain a birth certificate.

Thank you both for the information.
According to the 1851 census, Henry was born in or around 1849/1850. However, if you have seen my other posts, we are having difficulty verifying the census info too - as there seems to be pages missing from the ancestry.com 1851 census ! My belief is that Henry's parents were Henry and Charlotte (Hole). I am exploring other avenues in order to verify this (military records) but pinning down a baptism or 1851 census record would raelly help.
Regards
Richard.

Hi Richard,
You sent me a message off of Ancestry.com, but the email address I have for you keeps bouncing, so I thought I'd leave a message for you here. My gr-gr-grandfather was Walter J. Swaffield b. 1855 (son of Henry and Charlotte Hole). I believe you and I have corresponded previously, but I'll check my Swaffield records and see if I have anything new on your Henry. Have you tried looking for Henry's birth certificate in Bristol? I've got a copy of Walter J.'s that my great uncle picked up in England when he visited. I'll check it to see exactly which records building it came from and that might help.
My email address is lisa071573@aol.com if you want to shoot me an email from a different address than the one ancestry.com has.

Hi,
The 1851 census info came from a transcription done by Gordon Beavington many years ago.
