Hello.. I have been looking for a Thomas Millward born Hartington 1797. Name of Father, William.
1841 census, Thomas lived in Sutton Lane Ends Macclesfield, alone
1845 Thomas fathered a son, 1847 he married the mother, Martha Parr
1851 census, the family lived in Macclesfield
1861 census, Martha has taken son to live in Manchester
1861 census, Thomas in Macclesfield work house
1867 death of Thomas
What I have been hoping to find is had Thomas been married before
his marriage to Martha, and were there any children. ???
Thomas and his Father were both butchers by trade.

Hi Tilly
Welcome to Rootschat
I think the only way to be sure is by getting a copy of their marriage certificate or to check the entry in the Parish Records to see if it says widower or bac.

Hi Carol,
This is where I have come unstuck, I do not know where to get any other information.
On his marriage certificate in 1847, it has 'of age' he being in his late 40's at that stage.
I have all BMD certificates and census details of this family from 1840.
I was hoping someone would reconise this family and could fill in some of
the details from 1797 -1840.
I have also tried D.F.H.S
Thanks, Tilly

Hi Tilly
What does it say in the 'condition' box where it should say bach or wid? or is it blank, you have probably seen the earlier marriage for a Thomas MIlwood in Hartington to Elizabeth and the baptisms of two daughters
:)

Hi DebbieG.
In the condition column it has, Batchelor, and of full age.
It is a photo copy of the original certificate I have.
I have not seen anything of the other Thomas Millward's family
you mentiond, is it on the Familysearch site?

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the info, I shall follow that up, hopefully it is my Thomas
Bye Tilly :)

Hi Tilly
I don't think the Thomas who married Elizabeth Broadhurst in 1829 is your Thomas. This Thomas & Elizabeth are still in Hartington in the 1851 / 1861 census. I also found these burials at Hartington
Thomas Millward of Hartington 27 Feb 1863 aged 84
Elizabeth Millward relict, 1 Dec 1881 aged 74
Both in the same grave

Hi Carol,
Thank you for looking at the 1841/1851 Census.
I could not find a Mary Millward in the 1881 census,
I know she may have married by then but worth a try.
I have all the BMD certificates of my Thomas,
he died in Macclesfield Workhouse 1867.
It is from 1797-1840 I have missing, hope some one reconises his family.
1841 census he lived in Byron Street Sutton Lane Ends, Macclesfield,
as did many other Millwards, none seem to be related to my Thomas.
Shall keep trying, Bye Tilly

Hi Tilly--you also need to check with the name Milward with a single L--more usual before 1800, and lots of them in the Hartington, Derbyshire area--I can have a more thorough look for you if you wish ( am already following the Milward and Bonsall surnames in that area of Derbyshire for a friend.
email me on magssmithmgsc@gmail.com if you wish

Mil(l)ward and Bonsall
In case it is of interest, in terms of DNA the Derbyshire surnames of Mil(l)ward and Bonsall are very unusual in the UK, the Y DNA (i.e. male) being E1b1b1b*A. It is possible the original ancestor(s) were slaves who came to Britain with the Romans. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/peakdistrict/about/background
