Title: East Sussex Record Office - 22nd April
Post by: Chris in 1066Land on Tuesday 13 April 04 20:38 BST (UK)
Hi Sussex Researchers

I will be visiting the East Sussex Records Office on Thursday 22nd April 2004 from about 10am through to approx 1.30pm

After which I am an 'Invited Guest' to the opening of the 'ESAMP 20 years birthday Exhibition' at Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum from 2pm onwards.

I have contributed to the work of ESAMP (East Sussex Archaeological and Museums Project) for the last 5 years mostly through Graveyard Research in Lewes, Iron Age / Roman Cooking at various locations in the Eastern part of the county and Construction of Roundhouses.
Picture below shows me taking 'fresh baked bread' out of a reconstructed Iron Age Bread Oven.

In you have any lookup requests (not blanket searches) please add them as replies to this message

Hallo Chris,
Is it possible for you to look up the 1861/71 census' for me or is it just BMD? Flimwell Mill  near Ticehurst. I know my GGGgrandfather was miller there in about 1865, he was a John Weston wife Eliza, I know of one son born 1866 Luther. On Luthers birth cert it says  mother Eliza Weston formerly Saunders so theres a good chance that they were married although I cant find it, I thought if the census' were checked they might show other children and also narrow the wedding date down a bit, by the 1881 census both John and Eliza have disappeared, he might have died and she might have remarried any help appreciated, Jean

Hi Jean

Dont think I will have time to look at the census reels, there is always a waiting list for them.

But I will certainly look through the transcripts of the Churches at Flimwell and copy out all references to Baptism, Marriage and Death of any Westons.

Thanks Chris,
I'm really stuck with this pair, in the 1851 census John was still living at home(if this was the same John)with his parents at Argos Mill in Mayfield., he'd disappeared by 1881,
            Jean.

Hello Chris ..

Yes it's me again! We'd really appreciate a lookup on my husband's line this time.

My husband's 3xgreat grandfather was Henry Lennard, born 1805 in Bexhill. He married Sarah Ann before 1832, and I have a record of the family in Bexhill in the 1841 census showing Sarah Ann was born around 1807 in Henfield.

I would love to know Sarah Ann's surname if you have time to look for the marriage!

Thank you ... yet again!!

Very best wishes
Jennie

Hi Chris.

Could you please be so kind as to do a lookup for me for a Kate Taylor born around 1854 Brighton and Charlotte Taylor born around 1855 Brighton.  Their parents were James William Taylor and Caroline Charlotte Lillywhite.  Any help would be very much appreciated by a newbie.

Hi Chris
Sorry I just realised the date has passed.  Maybe if you are going again sometime in the future you could be so kind as to do a lookup for me.

Hi Hinuera2001

The trip got postponed, my car refused to start; but will be going again soon anyway.

Just had a look on the 1851 Census for Brighton, there is NO Kate Taylor, or James Taylor, but there is 1 Caroline Taylor, but she is only 5 years old.
So we can say, they were not actually in Brighton in 1851.
Will look through the rest of East Sussex 1851 possibly tomorrow to see if I can locate them

Hi Chris

Thank you very much for the help and the census lookup offer.   It is very much appreciated.  I do not know much about these two.  Can't seem to find a baptism for them so would appreciate any help to find any info on them.   Parents were James Taylor and Caroline Lillywhite.

Hello Chris,

I am planning a visit to Lewes records office when time permits!  Bit of a trek from Berkshire so I need to maximise my visit....

Is the records office very busy and is there really 'waiting list' to use some of the resources i.e. census returns on film?

I bumped into one the chaps from Lewes on Friday whilst I was in Brighton's local history centre and he advised that all I needed to do was book my micro fiche/film reader.  Can they book the micro fiche/film reader for the whole day?  It would seem hardly worth a visit if I am unable to book the whole day.

Hi Fosbeck

Yes, the record Office gets very busy, and it is essential to book.

I arrived there a couple of weeks ago to find no seats available, so after more than 1 hour waiting for a possible seat, I left and went and did other things.

Yes, you can book mico fiche / film reader, computer terminal for your laptop or just a seat at the research tables.

I usually book for all day, but only use the paper records and type them in my computer - so not sure about use of the film / fiche readers.
You could ring and book one for the morning session, then ring a bit later and book one for afternoon session if its not possible to book all day - but dont leave it till the last minute to book.

Hope that helps

Chris,

Thanks for the 'tips' on the records office at Lewes.  I find it very strange that the research area is much smaller that Brighton's History centre!  I will say, that Brighton is brilliant if you are concentrating on Brighton & Hove.  However, I need to look further and not all records for Brighton are in the Brighton History Centre.  Sally the mgr at Brighton is trying to get more local records into her centre but sadly this takes time and volunteers.

Once again, thank you for your info.
