I have been told that William Curtis 1863 - 1913 died in suspicious circumstances and that there was possibly an inquest into his death. I believe he died in 1913 in Basford, Nottinghamshire area. I am not able to locate where he is buried or if this is a true story.
His wife was Anne Ellen Edwards 1862-1915 and he was born in Saxlingham, Norfolk. He worked in 1901 census and Shipley Park / Osmaston Manor as a gamekeeper but where he went from there or when I don't know. Can anyone unravel this mystery for me?

If you can get his death certificate, it should tell you the cause of death and whether there was an inquest.
Documentation of inquests is not usually kept, but if it has been it will probably be at the relevant county records office. Otherwise, you should be able to find a report of it in a local newspaper - again the records office may be able to help, or the archives of the newspaper itself.

It has taken a bit of time but I have now established that William Curtis died between 1908 and 1912.
I found this out from marriages of his children- in 1908 he is shown as alive but on 1912 certs he is deceased. Unfortunately none of them married in between.
I have not been able to find either William or his wife, Ann Ellen on the 1911 census and some of his children are elusive there too.
He is still a big puzzle and as he is my husbands gt grandfather it is a shame not to find out more about him.
Can anyone help?

with the revised dates FreeBMD has 2 possible death - Cirencester or Devizes - so not local to Basford
But gamekeepers did seem to move round the country, have just discovered one in my family and cant keep up with him!

Thanks Liz
i will follow this up
Cheers

Just to let you know that I have found out that he died in 1909 in South Carlton in Lincolnshire.
It took several children's marriage certificates and then death certificates from the time period to find him.
William Curtis died of accidental poisoning b strychnine and an inquest was held.
I now need to find out when he returned to Lincolnshire and why, as he was employed as an Agricultural labourer (Formerly Gamekeeper on death Cert.) Also what happend to his wife and children after his death - some were married and living in Nottingham area but the others seem to have disappeared in 1911 census!!
I will also try to find out about the inquest details at some point.
Thanks for your help in trying to find him in the past though.
Cheers
Janet ;D

Hi,
Just checked the NFHS CD for the General Cemetery, and he is not buried there, so you can cross that one off the list!
Best wishes,

It seems very strange that there could be 2 Wm Curtis married to Anne Ellen Edwards of Oswestry and Wm being born in Norfolk. MY Wm Curtis did die under mysterious circumstances in Lincolnshire. As for the marriage I have a birth certificate and a marriage certificate for them, they were married in Oswestry Salop. He was born October 30th 1863 in Bessingham Norfolk, Father James Curtis, mother Ann Sendal, he married Anne Ellen Edwards in Oswestry on 12th November 1885, witnessed by Annie Sergeant and William Edward Edwards, Ann's brother.
