Congratulations Karen and aghadowey!  Everyone on the Canada board has benefited from your hard work and expertise.

And to dawnsh, another hooray and congrats!  dawnsh is a star on the London board, doing zillions of lookups at the London Metropolitan Archives for those of us that can't get there.

It is nice to see some more RC gems getting the recognition they deserve!

Happy days  ;D

Well as you know, we're a modest lot!  We like to let people slip into their new roles gently.  :)

It was tricky because the three new Mods are in different time zones - it would have meant posting the welcome message on the boards before they knew themselves that they had been Mod-ified.  :o

And part of the fun is seeing how long it takes Rootschatters to spot the change - hours in this case, lol!

Needless to say, they've been welcomed personally by us all.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Can you encourage the new mods to put up an avatar ??

Its good to put a face to the person, even as in AR's case, its not her !   I always imagine AR with that hat and lovely smile !

Thank you for your congratulations.

For those of you who haven't met me yet, you'll find me as on moderator and London Metropolitan Archives / City of Westminster Archives looker-upper on the Middlesex boards but I also do look-ups for the London boards too.

For those of you who do venture onto the Middlesex boards, I'm hoping that everyone will carry on being on their best behaviour.

Thank you everyone, also congratulations to Dawn and Karen. As Arranroots said the other mods have already welcomed us and assured us of their support as we find our way around this new role.
Lydart- will have a think about including an avatar.

Gosh Dawn, I'd be trembling in my boots if I had Middx ancestors ... and on my best behaviour  too !

No need to tremble Lydart, don't want people on Middx trying to slip minor indiscretions into their posts in an effort to catch me unawares.

It's one thing happily posting replies to requests, now I've been given a list of things I've got to watch out for  :o

all I can say is watch out Dawn, I may need your help in breaking down my brickwall. ::)

Post away Lizzie, there are many wonderful people on Middx and London with a vast wealth of knowledge and a good nose for 'sniffing out' those in hiding.

Many congratulations to the three of you from me too ;D...... obviously, very well deserved.

Dawn helped me fairly recently and I can't thank her enough, for the time she spent at the LMA, on my behalf.  She supplied me with some wonderful images, of family documents, that I would probably never have seen otherwise ;)

Well done!!

I am being very serious when I say that it would be VERY helpful if the list of things which new Moderators are told they have to watch out for were publicly posted here on RootsChat.

My congratulations to all of you - well deserved!  (Does anyone deserve this role??  ??? )

I'll add my vote to those of JAP and Tephra - it WOULD be very helpful to find what moderators have to watch out for, it feels a bit like a secret society sometimes!  I am a moderator of an admittedly smaller Internet group, and I have told them all what I watch out for - no secrets in our group, and it works well!  So let's hear it, Rootschat mods!

In general, most editing is normal "housekeeping" and these edits are usually commented on:

- deleting private e-mails,
- editing public e-mails,
- deleting details of living people,
- deleting copyright infringements,
- shrinking links,
- editing titles
- cropping/resizing images
- etc.

Add to that
- moving posts to a more appropriate board

And that's about 95% of what we do :)

Bob

Thanks for that very prompt reply, Bob!  :)

I'm really in awe of your ability to be across the whole of Rootschat and see what is happening - quite apart from the things you have set up here, and your IT knowledge including setting up websites, etc.

Yer a living Rootschat treasure, mate!  ;D

My moderating role includes ensuring respectfulness towards each other in posts that people make, and I'm sure there is a little bit of that here - just a little...

Dear Bob,

And that's about 95% of what we do :)

Bob

Ah yes, Bob!

But (as in most such situations) 95% is routine and, though undoubtedly important, is usually not contentious.

But what about the remaining 5%:
- it's the remaining 5% that matters
- it's that 5% which has caused in the past, and continues to cause, so much angst and frustration
- it's that 5% which discussions/debates here and elsewhere have been, and continue to be, about.

If only the 5% could be addressed in a sensible and open discussion on RC with RootsChatters and Mods entering into a reasoned discussion.  And with Mods not retreating into what now seems to many of us a bunker, them against us, mentality.  Sorry, but that is how it seems to many of us.

Well, aghadowey and co, I hope that you bring some fresh eyes to moderation on RC, and that you enjoy the job.  RC is certainly a great site and doesn't deserve aggro.  Best of luck!

- it's that 5% which has caused in the past, and continues to cause, so much angst and frustration

Actually it doesn't.

That's what makes Rootschat such a great place and Rootschatters so unique - that the number of complaints we get are vanishingly small and usually very easily resolved by means of a quick exchange of PMs.

And that's why we have the very best Moderating team, which is a privilege to work with.

Pam, I'm sorry, but I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Unfortunately, it is not so much a molehill as an iceberg - and Roootschatters only see the top ten percent!  ...

Without wanting to be sucky-uppy, it's good to know we're that well behaved, as I'd always felt that moderation here on rootschat works extremely well.  On some other (not genealogy) boards I've been involved in moderation has been far too heavy handed and inappropriate or too light handed and I've ended up leaving as it seemed the lunatics had taken over the asylum.  But rootschat, by contrast, seems to work extremely well.
