Title: Date and locate - one for the ladies!!
Post by: jo68 on Thursday 25 September 08 22:18 BST (UK)
One of the toughest to identify because of the fancy dress!. I haven't tried to guess who this is, he is definitely related to me as he was in the family album started by my G Grandmother & G Father on their mariage in Oct 1895 (it contains earlier pics too). All I know about this man is that he looks very good in a kilt - not much help!! Why would someone wear this   (about to go to war/ - Boer?)- is there a military /Scottish posting I should use? or is it purely pretentious?  Looks like the edges of the cabinet card have been trimmed to fit our old album. Thanks, Jo

sorry about the duplication.. It told me to rename as the file was already in use.. don't expect it matters too much, I can't work out how to remove. Sorry, not a very technical person! Jo

Hi Jo

I don't pretend to know anything really, but I'd suggest that this gentleman was perhaps in a Scottish Army battalion, as his cap looks distinctly like a glengarry.  If you google glengarry, wikipedia have a no-nonsense brief history - I dont' always believe everything from wiki, but this looks to be correct.  For a period in the late 1890's I understand that the glengarry did not have a chequered band, but still had the feather, which your chap appears to have.  You might be best posting a link on the Forces forum to get someone who really knows what they're talking about, as I may have got it completely wrong!!  But it would explain why he was in full dress for getting his piccy taken  ;D

Also, and again someone will be able to tell a lot better than I, but I think there was a photographer Whyte & sons in Ayrshire if my memory serves me......

Fine figure of a man  ;D

It certainly is a fabulous photo.

There was a Whyte & Sons in Inverness, and one in Glasgow. Couldn't find anything else....not much help I know... :P

Cheers,
China

Well, that would be the ceiling she'd just repainted, along with the walls, refinished the floor and laundered everybody's clothing in the pic she'd been restoring ;D

Just a thought that struck me when I first saw this pic - does anyone else think
his kilt is a bit on the short side?  ???  I'm sure kilts are supposed to lie mid-knee......

Thanks everyone,
His kilt does look short but maybe has trouble keeping his socks up or was tall. Don't know.
You've helped spark off some ideas. We have no relatives in Ayrshire as far as I know. There was a John White in Edinburgh 1883-1889 but I don't think he's the one - photo looks later to me and only relatives there would have been v. distant.

Think the photographer was James Whyte "photographie artist" who lived at 36 Nithsdale Rd, Tradeston, Glasgow in 1891 census, son John (19) was a photo artist then too.By 1901 the Whyte household had moved to 2 Leslie Rd Kinning Park, Glasgow. here 2 sons in the same house Quintin R.(21) & Thomas R. Whyte (18) were photographic operator /apprentices.
Going cross eyed looking at the bottom of the scotsman photo I can just about convince myself that the chopped off address could read 36 Nithsdale Rd. Now thinking photo may have been taken 1895-1900?
I've got "Christina" in the tree who was born at 48 South Kinning Close in 1880. I think this could he her father who was a "seaman" but is generally absent from the later censuses, I thought this would be because have been at sea, but it's possible he could have been fighting. I I'm attaching another photo of this man to see if you think it could be the same one... I do have the feeling I am just making up my own little story here!
Thanks, Jo

A couple from me.  One a tad different.

PS Poll, don't think that was me! I did one for Judy but I had a sample of the Tartan.  You might be thinking of Jim, dunno.

The kilt should cut the top of the knee.  :)

sorry but I don't think that going down a regimental route will get you anywhere. I can not see anything that says army to me. The shoes would appear to be more fitting for dancing in rather than marching (in or out of the mess as my Glasgow born father would have said). The cantel on the sporran shows no evidence of a badge, neither does the buckle on the belt that would have given him support in holding his sword (the one across his chest).  I feel that this outfit was one that he could have dressed in at the photographers studio.

That would perhaps explain why the kilt looks too short ;)  You see Jo, I knew someone who knew what they were talking about would happen along!

For what it's worth Jo, I don't think that's the same man.... sorry  :(

Hi I know this is an old thread but on seeing the pic I noticed the brooch.(jewelry is a bit off a passion.)

I was recently asked to source a stone for a similar one and the guy asking was a piper. I could be wrong but is that a glimpse of bagpipes on his hip?
Title: Re: Date and locate - one for the ladies!! Scot's Guard Piper ?1890
Post by: jo68 on Monday 17 June 13 22:09 BST (UK)
Hello again,
I have recently been given some more information about this photo - found a descendant of my g-grandmother's sister who had the same photo hanging on a wall on the other side of the world. They were informed this gentleman was a member of the Scots guards - looks like a piper, and probable surname is Cramond. Any thoughts?
