Hello,
I'm looking for information on an ancestor called Richard Humphreys born somewhere in Wales.
On the 1901 Census he is listed as being in Tipton in the West Midlands on a boat with his wife Ellen (formerly Bailey), and several children.
I know Ellen was born 5th Jan 1858 in Middlewich, Cheshire to Joseph Bailey (also a Boatman) and his wife Mary Ann (formerly Broadhurst). I also know that her eldest daughter Mary Jane was born to a Henry Theobald in 1878, whom she had married in 1876. However Ellen and Richard's first child was born in 1881 and although on all Birth Certificates for subsequent children she is listed as Ellen Humphreys, I havent managed to find a marriage for them, or a death place.
I would appreciate any help or advice that anyone can offer in order to help me trace the Humphreys line, and Richard and Ellen's deaths.
Thanks

Have you found the family on any earlier census?
What were the names of their children?
Jackie.

I havent managed to find them on earlier census' no, despite the fact that most were alive at the time of the 1891 aswell.
The Children are:
Mary Jane (1878)
Richard (1881)
Peter (1885)
Selina (1888)
Ellen (1890) (often called Nellie)
Lizzie (1892)
William (1896)
George (1898)
Olive (1900)

I've searched 1881+1891 for them,no luck so far.
As far as the census is concerned, due to the occupation
of Richard, they may have been moored out of enumerators
reach,(like a lot of my boatmen ancestors).
I'll get back to you if I find anything
Jackie.

That was my thought aswell
Thank you

Thanks for that, I have two lots of Humphreys/Humphries families in my tree. So far completely unrelated as some are Welsh and they spell it different on a lot of records.
I havent at the moment got any information on the people mentioned, as I am focussed on Richard Humphreys at the moment

Hi,
in 1911 there is a Richard Humphreys aged 52, a captain working for Fellows and Morton co Canal Carriers.
It says he was born Cefn, Wales. He had a wife assisting her husband called Charlotte aged 61 born Brierley Hill, Staffs. They state they ve been married 6 years.
I know he was married to Ellen but it is a coincidence.
Living on 'Brentford', Bordesley Street wharf, Birmingham.
Best wishes
Cathy

I suppose it's possible that between 1901 and 1911 that he and Ellen were no longer together for whatever reason.
In 1901 he was recorded as born in Cefn, Wales (wherever that is) and the age also fits.
Combined with the fact that most of his children were born in the Midlands suggests he was based there.
I think I need to find where the children (and possibly Ellen) were before I go with it though.
Thanks

Hello
I am new to this site Ellen Bailey daughter of Joseph Bailey was my Great Grandmother. She died on the 4th of May 1901 on a canal boat at Kingswood Rowington Warwickshire. I haven't found her burial yet. I have never found a marriage certificate for Richard Humphries to Ellen Bailey or under the name of Ellen Theobald. As her first Husband Henry Theobald was still alive he did'nt die till 1943.
My grandmother Mary Jane Theobald known as Humphries married my Grand father William Yarnall at Daventry Register Office in 1902 under the name of Humphires and gave Richard Humphries as her father.
Richard and Ellen are on the 1901 census RG13 /2734 folio 115 page 33 Tipton Green Staffordshire.
Richard Humphries re-married on 19/12/1904 at St Mary's church Paddington Middlesex to Charlotte Terry who was previously married to Charles Worrall.
I believe that Richard was the son of Richard Humphries and Caroline Fairclough who married at St Boniface church Bunbury Cheshire. This Richard was baptised 17/10/1830 at Whittington Shropshire. On Richard and Charlottes Marriage at Paddington he states his fathers name to be Richard and a boatman. Also on Caroline's death certificate 04/04/1874 Husband Richard senior staes he is a Boatmen.
Richard could have been born at Cefn which is on the Llangollen canal which I belive they worked at that time.
Regards
Lorna`

Hello Lorna,
Thanks ever so much for that, i've been looking for more relatives from this branch for a while!
I have heard of your Grandmother before, my Great Great Grandmother Ellen is listed as being with the Yarnall's on the 1911 Census.
I believe I also read an article in a Canal Magazine maybe written by you?
Unfortunately whilst I have a picture of Richard and Ellen, no information about them survives in my line, I even spoke with one of their Grandchildren who knew nothing, though she is 90 next month.
I found a census entry suggesting Richard was the son of Richard Humphreys and Jane Evans from Penmorfa/Dolbenmaen Caernarvonshire. This family also had a boat link if I remember rightly.
Can I ask how sure you are?
Lucas
