Title: Sharing Useful Links: GERMANY and E. Europe
Post by: Berlin-Bob on Tuesday 14 September 04 07:51 BST (UK)
While trying to find out more about my family in Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine etc, I have found various links which I thought could be useful to other researchers.

If you have researched in the UK you are used to 1881, 1901, freeCEN, freeBMD, etc etc.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT HERE !
Sorry for shouting, but I wanted you to hear that !  I can explain it in more detail, if anybody is interested, but maybe on another thread.

The biggest database for Germany I have found so far is GEDBAS at
http://gedbas.genealogy.net/index.jsp

The input mask is similar to familysearch, but no "soundex"  facility

Quick translation help:
Vorname = First name
Nachname = Surname
Ehepartner = spouse
Datum (Ereignis) = Date (event)
Ort (Stadt,Provinz,Land) = Place (town, district, state)
Suchen = Search
Zurücksetzen = Clear

There are over 2.2 million name from over 800,000 families here.

I'll add more links here later, especially database links !
Please add your links, too !

Here is another useful link: http://www.geneanet.org/

As far as I can tell (at the moment) it seems a way of bringing researchers into contact.

Type in the name you are searching for, either Quick Search, or various kinds of advanced search, and get a list of people found, with contact links.
If you then click on the contact link, you may get an e-mail address, or a link to their web-site, where you can go looking for more info.

Here's a link I found for Austria: http://www.aafhg.org.uk/

The site is still fairly new and is doesn't have "people data" on it, but it is expanding !  So let's wait and  see !

(edited on 20/9/04 after I realised I had forgotten the URL ! Ooops ! Sorry !)

Another one: the International Internet Genealogical Society

with BDM exchange for many countires,
e.g. Austria: http://iigs.rootsweb.com/bdm/austria/index.html
e.g. Germany: http://iigs.rootsweb.com/bdm/germany/index.html

Sounds good, but: "Last revised 11 April 2003" (DE) and. I would guesstimate about 3000 names on the German site and very few an the austrian site!

http://www.movinghere.org.uk/

This is a great web-site for all sorts of info. about jewish, caribbean, south asian and irish immigrants.

I've been looking through the jewish section, and there is a wealth of advice about how and where to look, and lots of informations about what records are kept and where, and also links to other useful sites.

Well worth looking at, if you are researching jewish ancestors from Europe.

http://www.movinghere.org.uk/galleries/roots/jewish/jewish.htm

I haven't checked out the other sections, but if they are anything like what I have seen so far from the jewish section, then they are well worth a look !

JDG just posted some history links on Emmigrants, which are well worth looking at for immigrants, too
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12419.0 and
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12420.0

The main site is http://www.zum.de/whkmla/region/region.html

If your ancestors came from Germany, Austro-Hungary, Russia or Poland, it is well worth looking into the history of the area, especially as the borders changed so often in the last 200 years.
It could be, that your russian ancestors are, in fact, polish, your polish ancestors are german, etc, etc.

This site is interesting if you have jewish ancestors, who originally came from Galicia (present day S. E. Poland and Western Ukraine):

http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/surdex/si_ma.htm

Enter a surname, and check out the links to various sites where this surname appears. (cemetry lists, trade directories, lists of taxpyaers, Holocaust survivors, etc, etc).

Also interesting:
in many entries, there is also a list of Surnames with the same Daitch-Mokotoff soundex !

At the top of the page there is another link, to http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/index.html

This has lots more Info. about Galicia, with links to online Databases !!

More on Galicia:  http://www.halgal.com/index.htm

Especially interesting: http://www.halgal.com/vitalrecords.html

"Tutorial of Vital Records
A detailed look at reading records in the standard format used from the late 18th century up to the middle of the 20th century.  Includes a step-by-step process of reading the records using numerous scanned images.  These tutorials are useful to genealogists researching any of the territory that was once controlled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including Western Galicians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, etc.).  Please be patient while the pages download."

Also of interest to anybody with R.Cath. records, as the tutorials include translation of all latin terms !
Also lots on naming methodology, alternative names, etc

Also: http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/ for church record translations (Latin, Hungarian, Slovak and English)
Especially useful, generally, is http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/Latin_Terms_and_Phrases.html

Hi Bob in berlin - it's Heidi in Switzerland
Just wanted to say that the links you are supplying are very interesting. Most Swiss seem to originate somewhere else than Switzerland although my husband's lot are genuine Emmentaler, somewhere from a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere. The Swiss are so well organised that looking for ancestors is a bit boring. Official documents don't show the birthplace so much, but place of origin, so you know where to go back to. When I got married I automatically became a citizin of Langnau i/Emmental - other countries other customs.

Polish Roots:

I am adding a few sites I've found for searching for polish ancestors. I haven't had a chance to really go through them yet, so I won't comment (much) on them. Try them out and see, maybe you can add your comments to this thread.

http://www.polishroots.org/  This seems to be very informative, but it is an american site, written by and with emphasis on polish-americans
http://www.polishroots.org/genpoland/index.htm  This page has lots of "How to ..." info.

Another site with polish links: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/1538/Polishpg.html

It's worth checking whether your polish ancestors were jewish, as there are (literally) hundreds of sites for jewish genealogy. But that could be another thread ....

In some places it was customary to produce Ortsfamilienbücher (Local Heritage Books) with BMD info. of the inhabitants.

Check your luck here: http://db.genealogy.net/ofb/map.cgi?land=deutschland
to see if "your" Ortsfamilienbuch is on-line !

Hi Bob,

I was about to give up a search for a POW in the UK in WW1 named Oswin Ihle but your site has lots of new addresses so I will give it another try.  I am told he came from Chemnitz but not sure.  He lived in Manchester and Liverpool before internment.  Many thanks for all your info.

Just came across this site:  http://members.cox.net/hessen/links.htm

Well worth looking at. It has lots of "How to ..." pages, and advice, and links to all sorts of data (e.g. Parish registers, ortssippenbücher, archives, etc, etc)

Don't miss his "word of Caution: http://members.cox.net/hessen/word.htm

Very good if your relatives came from Hessen, but also worth browsing for a general idea of researching in Germany

for instance, a "potted history" of Germany, and how to research in Germany:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/germrec.htm

Lots of reading here, and well worth a (longer) visit !

Both links worked for me. Interesting...

You can put in just the name of a village, etc. I put in my great-great-grandmother's surname and got Maria Katharina Michler born 1904 and died 1800 married and had several children (born between 1750-1900)  ??? The death and birthplaces make sense (near Saarbrucken) but the marriage place in Bayern doesn't  ::)

Just a reminder: GEDBAS is a purely voluntary collection.
Anybody can upload their GEDCOMs there, but there is no "organisation and planning" as in sites like freeREG, freeCEN, or freeBMD, etc, so there is no way of knowing what is still to come / might be coming.

You need to constantly re-visit, to see if anything new has been uploaded.

Thank you very much for all these links Bob.
I have just put in a search request with Gedbas for a GGGrandmother:

Anna Maria Luckhardt
Born: Frankfurt, Germany - about 1828
Father’s Name: Christopher Luckhardt – Occupation: Florist
Married: Joseph Lanchbury - 15 September 1864 – Westminster, London, England.
Children: Charlotte Maria Lanchbury 1865-1920 Paulina Lanchbury 1867 -  1911 Ellen Matilda Lanchbury 1872 - 1953
Died: England - between 1901 – 1911

The German embassy had no record of her birth certificate. they did have links to family searches but all of them were very expensive and so your links are really helpful. Gedbas have a link to translate the page into English. Without that, I may have struggled but it was straightforward and so we wait to see if anyone can help us trace back from her. We don't even know when she arrived in England.

May as well put the request here too. Hope you don't mind.

first record we can find for her in England.

England Census 1861.
Address: 6 Oxford Terrace, Paddington, Middlesex, England
Occupation: Servant for Lieutenant Deveraux and Maria Hickman.
Anna-Maria is named Mary. We know this is Anna Maria as the age and place of birth is right, also, the address is the same on her Marriages and Banns four years later.

We have census records for her right up until 1901 when she is aged 73 and a widow. She probably died before 1911 but we can't find any record of her death either, probably because of multiple misspelling of all her names, Christian, maiden and married.

English records usually turn up in the end and we hope the same will happen with the German links, translations permitting. If there is anything helpful in the search process for others, I will let you know.

Thanks again for getting us started

I've been re-examining the REMENYI family history
Topic: REMENYI, Cleveland, Ohio
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=33455.0
and Roy mentions there the Trianon Treaty of 1920

I looked this up and discoverd a lot of information which helps to explain some of the many different place names/country borders of pre-WW2 Europe.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Trianon
and in particular the map shown there under "Borders of Hungary"

For more maps of this time, see also Google Images: Trianon Treaty

Dear Bob,

Apologies if my previous request should not have gone here and hope you don’t mind if I post it up again as a separate thread. However, I think this is the right place for the following.

In attempting to find the LUCKHARDTs, it was suggested that Christopher Luckhardt may have had a florist shop in Frankfurt and that I could try and find a business directory from 1820 – 1840 and see if he is registered there. The Anglo German Society has a Hessen archive that I have been told is very good but it costs quite a lot to join. If all else fails I may do so but here is the link and membership fees for any that are interested

http://www.agfhs.org/site/index.php/about-us/join-the-society

UK membership
Single member: £15.00 plus one-off £7.00 joining fee
Joint membership: £16.00 plus one-off £7.00 joining fee

EU membership
Single membership: £16.50 plus one-off £7.00 joining fee

International membership
Single membership: £18.50 plus one-off £7.00 joining fee.

In the meantime and on a hunch, I Googled Frankfurt and with the help of translation aps found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesse

and then I tried this

Hessen Archive - Hessisches hauptstaatsarchiv – and found this

http://www.hauptstaatsarchiv.hessen.de/irj/HHStAW_Internet?cid=3f29115905bd32f2a9df3ae02c0c031f

This site does not have any direct link to Genealogy but it does have a tab that translates the whole page into English and a means to email the archive with any questions. I have just done this to request a business directory for Franfurt 1820 – 40

Hope this is helpful and shall I update all on the fresh thread? Don't want to double up but can update here as well if you like or you can delete this. :-\

Please advise

Hi Bob; Have just returned from a family search visit to Schleswig-Holstein. I had been given a copy of this Directory S-H Archives HamburgUP_LASH_100_Archivfuehrer.pdf which proved helpful. It was published in 2012, but is already partly out of date. Worth referring to, but check before you go or write or telephone.
Found it essential to distinguish between State (Civil) Archives and Church Archives. Many State archives only keep those documents affecting the town or county activities and may not e what a family historian is after.
For Schleswig-Holstein Church archives visit http://nordelbisches-kirchenarchiv.de/ (German language only) but check before you go - they may also be out of date or out of the office.

Update ... edited version of an email.....

Vienna, March 26th, 2017

New at GenTeam:

Dear Researcher and Genealogist,

On my own account:

With today´s online data, approximately 16,2 million entries are now available for the currently 35,500 registered users.

At this point, I would like to thank all individuals, who have furnished GenTeam over the last 7 years with vital information, all those who work on long-term projects, but also all those who work behind the scenes to ensure that GenTeam functions properly and continues to expand.

GenTeam is an European platform through which historians and genealogists, who work independently or as a team on databases, can furnish this data to all researchers. All data at GenTeam is available free of charge. The use of GenTeam also requires no membership fee.

An additional development created parallel to GenTeam is www.GenList.at, a bilingual mailing list which more than 1,700 members.

And now to the Actual update:

1     New: Military Casualty Lists
       Austrian-Hungary World War 1

In the Casualty Lists you will find the wounded, prisoners of war, and the fallen from all member countries of the Habsburg Monarchy. In total, there will be approximately 3 to 3,5 million entries. You will find offices, one-year volunteers, and, naturally, the whole gang with all confessions, this, also Jewish, Muslim and Protestant soldiers.
The following excerpts of a total of over 720 lists are already online on GenTeam now:

If you are looking for place names in Germany (or Prussia), this is the place to be !

http://gov.genealogy.net/search/name (http://gov.genealogy.net/search/name) and enter the name you are searching for in "Ortsname" (Place name)
You will then see a map showing all occurences of this name, with a list of contexts (parish, town, bishopric, admin-district, etc.) for this name

Click on any link in this list for more details, e.g. where they "belonged" at different times.

It is a german site, so some knowledge of german helps, but it is mainly tables of "facts" (names, places, dates) so you should be able to get the gist of most of it.

And if not, start a new query on RootsChat and ask there for help :)

regards,
Bob

ps. There are also place names from all over the world in this database, but with the emphasis on Europe.
See the coverage-map on this descripion page:  http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/GOV (http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/GOV)

Here is another Genteam update. I have abbreviated some of the (long) email but there's lots here....

GenTeam is celebrating its tenth anniversary! On January 10, 2010, GenTeam went online with approximately 1.3 million entries. Since then, more than 19 million entries have been added. The database has thus grown to more than 20.4 million records. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this project! The number of registered and active users has also continually increased and has now reached 50,000. They all benefit from free access to all data without having to pay any membership fees.

Gazetteer: Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, South Tyrol: Thanks to the great work of Mag. Ingrid Schuster, approximately 4,500 locations for today’s Slovakia as well as Ruthenia were added to the GenTeam Gazetteer in November 2019. This database now comprises more than 76,000 locations in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, South Tyrol and Slovenia with information on the respective Roman Catholic parish, any previous parishes, the year the registers begin, as well as the respective archive.

Details on this update
1       Military – Austro-Hungarian casualty lists of World War I: Already approximately 1.9 million records online! The casualty lists enumerate the wounded and killed soldiers as well as the prisoners of war of all crown lands of the Habsburg monarchy. In their entirety, these lists will hold approximately 3 to 3.5 million names. They include officers and one-year volunteers as well as subordinated military personnel of all denominations, including Jewish, Muslim and Protestant soldiers.

2        Diocese of Passau: Already 4.4 million records online. The overall number of approximately 4.4 million records from the Diocese of Passau comprises about 440,000 marriages (complete) and about 2.07 million baptisms. The remaining records are burials. This database contains information on the parish, volume, page, last name, first name(s) and date/year. In some cases, the occupation and the address/town are also indicated. You can access the church records of the Diocese of Passau at www.matricula-online.eu. For a list of the available parishes and their respective periods as well as further important information on this database, click the green Help/Info button in the top right corner of the GenTeam website.

3        New: Obituaries of “Neues Wiener Tagblatt Besides the major daily papers from the monarchy (Pester Lloyd, Neue Freie Presse, Wiener Tagblatt), many further newspapers contain obituaries for persons belonging to the middle class. In this update we have added entries for the year 1883 as well as for the period 1914-1918.

4        Vienna – Roman Catholic baptisms: Records have been added for the parishes of 03 Landstrasse, 06 Gumpendorf, 08 Alservorstadt Pfarre, 08 Alservorstadt Gebäranstalt, 15 Reindorf, 16 Neulerchenfeld, 16 Altottakring and 18 Währing. The numbers indicate the respective district of Vienna. For a list of the available parishes and their respective periods as well as further important information on this database, click the green Help/Info button in the top right corner of the GenTeam website.

Catholic burials for the first district of Vienna are thus complete for the period 1784-1938.For a list of the available parishes and their respective periods as well as further important information on this database, click the green Help/Info button in the top right corner of the GenTeam website.
