Is there a site where I can look up families in the 1851 census in these areas please?
I am looking for Andrew Duncan and his wife Grace, possibly child Mary aged 1 or less. His family (parents Andrew and Janet and their childrew including Sophia, Jessie, David, Alexander, William, Mary, Janet) lived in these towns.
Thanks,
Pam

Hi Pamela...I havent the 1851 census, but did come across in Scottish Documents (Wills) one Andrew Duncan in 1854. Might be worth looking at.

Thanks, Andrea. That is the will of the father of Andrew and gave us a lot of information, including the names of Andrew snr's parents. The name Jessie is not included, although she consistently signs herself "Your Loving sister" in letters to Andrew junior. So I suppose she is one of the other girls but since she mentions every other one at least once in her letters (our choice had been Janet), she can't be.
That Scottish documents site is great, isn't it.

Pam,
Jessie is a pet form of Janet, used in 18th century Scotland and later. ;)

Thnaks, Nell. We had wondered about that. Perhaps the Janet referred to once in the letters is a close cousin. There was certainly a lot of repetition of names. We have an address that Jessie wrote from in Glasgow in 1882. We have not found her in the 1881 census by name. Perhaps there is a way of searching by address. She would probably be entered as Janet rather than Jessie.
