Title: Scottish BMD
Post by: BoHedley on Sunday 21 September 08 13:32 BST (UK)
Would anyone know how to search for Scottish BMD on Ancestry.

When you search by location and click on Scotland the BMD fold just opens and closes without revealing any links to records.

At the bottom of the list beneath (which has nothing to do with Scottish BMD) you can click on  "29 more links" but this only gives some of the Scottish counties.

If you dont know which county to search this isn't much help.
Does the Scottish BMD differ from the English BMD in that it is listed by county or do you have to go to Scotlands people and subscribe again?

Tried Ancestry phone help lines but didn't get much joy - they dont seem clued up on Scotland!

I would welcome any sort of help on this subject as I am "stumped".

I think that Scotland has a much tighter hold on its BMD records than England and Wales. Ancestry has limited census information for Scotland but no original images and I suspect that the only way you will get to search Scottish BMDs online is through Scotland's People.

Unless someone else knows otherwise...

I always start with the IGI for births and marriages.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Pre civil registration it is very good and the civil records 1855-1875 are on the IGI. After that time for civil records you probably need ScotlandsPeople.

I use ancestry for the Scottish Census (some not so good transcriptions) but find a general search of all census will  not return the found records - so I have to search every census in Scotland separately.

For deaths pre 1855 the main information comes from MIs and burial records & as they are not indexed online you do need to know the county. 1855 and later I use SP for deaths.

You can check each of the county boards on RootsChat for other links that may be useful. If you can find some of your folks on SP and/or the IGI, you will have a better idea as to which counties to search. Genuki, www.genuki.org.uk also has lots of information for Scotland in general and each of the counties

Thanks to all above for replies - I have now more to go on and can stop searching in vain on Ancestry.

I think Ancestry should have a note next to the Scottish BMD link - it would save people a lot of time!
