Having requested & received a copy of a death certificate,I managed to obtain the funeral notice of Captain William Dalgarno. He died September 22nd 1902 at 6 Temple Street,Middlesbrough.I had hoped that the funeral notice would state where it was taking place but no! I do n't know what my next step should be so I'm hoping some kind person can help me. It would be great to locate the grave & obtain a photo of the headstone. Can you help me please?

Hi flst,
Where was the funeral notice? Middlesbrough Evening Gazette? I know the announcements didn't always give burial details.

I now have the burial information on William Chrystall Dalgarno. He is buried in Linthorpe Cemetery, grave no.3D. Is there any kind person able, and willing, to take a photo of his gravestone for me,please?
flst

that's a strange number ! The map I have of Linthorpe Cemetery gives grave numbers of a letter then 5 digits ,
eg A10168
is the grave a Quaker burial ?

Hi,Nutty1966 &ecneps,
I emailed Middlesbrough Council on Sunday & today I received,in the post a photocopy of the plot & cemetery plan.I can see that D3 is in a section 1-5071/2,at the outer edge backing onto Burlam Road.I understand I cannot post attachments to lookup threads nor PM's.If you are willing to send me a pm.with your private email address I could forward the layout that way to you.(I quite understand if you do n't want to disclose it to me!) Regards,

Hi flst,
Sadly I have to report that the three of us couldn't find the headstone for you. I tried to phone the cemetery office to see if there should have been one, but no-one was there to take calls (forgot it was Saturday!). Did you ask if there was a headstone, as the office should be able to tell you?
Odd really, as he only died in 1902. I took a couple of pics of where it should have been, will post them tomorrow.

So sorry to hear you'd a wasted journey. Thanks for looking for it. It sounded as though you were going to have a good time when you all met up.I hope you did. I wiil phone the cemetery office & tell you what they say.

Oh, it wasn't a wasted journey!
Here's a view of where the grave should be, (1)halfway between the lovely carved bird and the headstone to the right of the tree and (2) halfway between the tree and the stone bottom right:

If the cemetery office says there should be a headstone, we'll have to re-think!

Lovely photos, thanks all of you.I will phone the office & see if there is a headstone.I'm afraid I just assumed there would be especially when they offered me a plan of the site.I hope you enjoyed your trip to the cemetery,I always enjoy looking through graveyards which seems odd to those who are n't genealogists! I used to take my children on trips to graveyards & they thought nothing odd in exploring .It was even better when they were old enough to read & could help find surnames for me!Now I've got a digital camera it's so much easier & faster than writing down the inscriptions by hand.
By the way,has that section been renumbered?

We managed to work out from the plans where D3 should have been, as some of the headstones had numbers on them. I wondered if you had asked about whether there was a stone or not, but I'm surprised the office didn't tell you yea or nay when you got the plot number from them.
Yes thanks we had a good time looking for others that we might recognise, taking pics of unusual stones etc, then all had coffee afterwards :)

Hi,I'm just off the phone to the cemetery office. They said they'd no way of knowing if there was a headstone or not.So it seems there is n't one for my ancestor. However, if anyone's looking for a grave they can put down a small marker to indicate where the plot is.I hope this information may prove useful to someone in the future!

I find that very unusual, and a bit annoying, another local authority, Redcar & Cleveland, can tell you if there's a headstone, or a vase, who bought the plot and their address, etc, etc.
It's also surprising that someone who was a captain and died as recently as 1902 shouldn't have a headstone.
Well, we'll know for future reference, sorry not to find what you were hoping for
Kind regards,
Barbara
