Title: Dublin Metropolitan Police [Kavanagh Cullen]&(Kavanagh-Napier)
Post by: Jytefas on Saturday 29 January 05 17:45 GMT (UK)
Two of my Great Grand Uncles John and James Kavanagh were members of the Dublin Metropolitan Police and I would be grateful for any information I can obtain on them. They were born around the mid to late 1830's to mid 1840's. (Their sister Catherine Kavanagh my Great Grandmother was born 1843.) The following list of names may contain the names of my Family James Kavanagh Warrent Numbers 6788 and 7285 could well be one and John Kavanagh Warrent Numbers 5540 and 6356 could well be the other. Native Parishes are given as Carnew and Gorey County Wexford. Which would be correct as their home place Aughnamaulmeen would be central to each.

I am not sure as to what steps I should take from here to fine further information on my family members, and would welcome any information or assistance on this.

Thanks Kate

I actually have this book  “The Dublin Metropolitan Police”: A Complete Alphabetical List of Officers and Men, 1836-1925, Jim Herlihy, Four Courts Press, Dublin 2001 and have been able to identify my G.G.Uncles on the listings. But that is the some total of the information I have on James and John. Wondering whatever become of them and their families, maybe one-day I will get lucky.

Regards
John

Hello John,

I see you have the book on Metropolitan Police. Is the address Jim Herlighy, Fourt Courts Press, Dublin 2001? Also, other then a member's name, does it give any other info on the person? And could you tell me how much it is to order this book?  Thank you.

Hi

You are correct the book is by Jim Herlihy. The list covers all those 12,566 members of the DMP. The information concerning each member of the DMP is given in the following order: Surname, Christian name; DMP registered number, year of birth; native parish and county. Members who were killed on duty are identified also.

Book price I guess somewhere in the region of £45 - £50

Hope this helps, if you any other queries please ask

John

Hi Catherine

I would really appreciate it, when time permits, if you could check on a Henry Stanley, warrant #7931. I do have a copy of his police record but.....I believe from what I have for county, parish, post town is wrong & whoever wrote this in made an error.  What I have is...county - Galway, parish - Modreeny, Post town - Nenagh.  For one thing, Modreeny is I believe in Tipperary, not Galway. Recommended by a Dr. Murdock.

Thank you for your reply.

May you are correct, Modreeny is in county Tipperary. The DMP listing indicates its in Galway.  I have encountered this also, it appears the postal Town address sometimes may cross county boundaries.

This may be of use also

Hello Catherine,

Would you be so kind as to do a look up for me in your book.

Alfred Edward Johnston born 1868 Gloucester England.

Assume we are talking about 1888 (when he would be about 20) to join.  I have him listed on census 1881 as a schoolboy, but he is not shown on 1891 or 1901 and I was told he was in an Irish Police Force so this would account for him not being listed in u.k.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Regards
J.

Hiya Jilly,

There was an Alfred Johnston in the RIC.
His registration No 52733 means he joined the force during the period 8th August 1883 - 10th April 1888.

All the Best, Christopher

Thanks Christopher,  I think this must be him as the age would tally.

How can I find out any more details, would I have to pay a fee and apply for a search by the RIC record office.

Or is there some way I could do it myself.

Regards
Jill

Hi Catherine,  Could you kindly look up in your book any information you can find about the following:

Alfred Edward Johnston born Gloucester England 1868
No 52733
Joined RIC between 8th August 1883 - 10th April 1888

I believe in fact he joined in 1887.

Am I right in thinking it lists all info. e.g. time in force if married, service record etc.

Would be most grateful for any help please.
Thanks
J.

Progress at last. I have finally located a Mary Kavanagh, daughter of my Great Grand Uncle James Kavanagh formally of Aughnamaulmeen (Wexford) and who served in the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Mary Kavanagh of 18 Sandwith St., was born abt 1882 and married Henry Napier, (Tobaccionist) 46 Great Brunswick St., at the RC Church of St. Andrews on Wednesday, 15 June 1904.  Henry’s father is listed as Henry, occupation Brass Finisher. Mary’s father James Kavanagh is listed as D.M.P.

I have searched the 1901 census looking for James, born Co. Wexford, Occupation D.M.P. and cannot find anything.

If any of this looks familiar to you then I would love to hear from you! ;)

Finally located one of my Great Grand Uncles. James a DMP who married Ellen Cullen on the 13th Sep 1874. Castle Yard is address given as his Residence. This was headquarters for ‘B Division’ I have further found out that James spent 9 years in this Division  Feb 1869 to May 1877. Ellen’s address is given as 4 Harry St. Witnesses are Denis Kavanagh and Mary Ann Cullen. On the birth of three of their children; Mary Ellen 1877, Catherine Anne 1876.  Margaret 1880, Their home residence is given as 24 Townsend St.

Any of this familiar to anyone, if so would love to hear from you…. As an aside, what cemetery is most likely to have been used for people living in and around Ranalagh during this period?

New Year greeting to everyone!! :)

....

Ranelagh is Dublin South and back then was a suburb, but most of it was in the city parish of St. Peter. The same parish would apply if the family were Church of Ireland. The RC parish would have been Rathmines.

For burials after the 1850s, I'd try the outlying cemeteries first - i.e. Dean's Grange, Mount Jerome and Glasnevin/Prospect.

Glasnevin has records online on a fee paying website. See the resource topic - Dublin Graveyards (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,501983.0.html)
