Hi,
I need to find a marriage and children for Joseph Ford b1793 Coaley.
The information i have on Joseph Ford is,he was hanged on 1st september for Horse theft,he was then burried under Coaley church tower on the 4th september.there was 300 people turn up for his funeral and he left a wife and 4 young children behind.his marriage would be around 1810 to 1816.
I have looked on the IGI site and my Parish records but cant find a Marriage for Joseph Ford or his children.i have the prison ref number and the cause of death is showed on the original burial records which i have not seen.
Is there a way of finding out who his family was through the prison record or the burial records ?
Thanks Pete

I have found the family for Joseph.
I still need a marriage for Joseph Ford to Sarah ? around 1812
Also i need a death/burial for Edmund Ford b1812 Dursley, looks like he died be 1814 because the second child was also baptised Edmund b1814 Dursley.
Cheers Peter

Peter,
From the records I transcribed from Coaley's BT's, I can assure you that a Joseph Ford married an Elizabeth Butt on October 6 1804.
Regards
Chas
P.S. and on Aug 12 1805 Louisa daug of Joseph and Elizabeth was baptized and goodness me what a year for GABBS - 4 buried between Feb and Sept! Chas
P.P.S. a Sarah Ford was buried at Coaley on Jan 27 1807.

Hi Dee,
Thanks for the reply.yes i have the above info.Joseph Ford and Sarah and two children baptised called Edmund Ford, the first Edmund was baptised 1812,and the second was baptised 1814.normally when the child dies they call the next child the same name.the problem is the burial record says he was 9 when he died, which dont sound correct,it should be 7,thats if the first Edmund Ford b1812 died as a baby.
If there is two Edmund Ford's there should be another burial 1812/1813 , unless they baptised the same Edmund twice,i cant see why they would, but who knows.
Its a strange one to work out.
Cheers Peter

Hi Peter,
Unfortunately the Dursley burials I have are only covered between 1813-1824 period.
However, looking at the baptisms for Dursley there is a Edmond Fords baptised 6 January 1814 Dursley father Joseph (occupation mason) and mother Sarah. So if the first Edmond died aged 9 and was born circa 1812, the one above was born circa 1813 and would possibly fit who you are looking for ?
If I have the right Ford family, let me know as there are also four other siblings, if you don't already have the baptisms.
Regards
Dee :)

Hi Dee,
Yes thats the problem i have, there is no records for marriages or burials around 1812.yes that is the other Edmund Ford b1814 of Joseph and Sarah, there first Edmund b1812 must of died to call the second child Edmund.looks like we will never know.
I have gloucestershire parish records from 1700 to 1800 and 1813 to 1837,its a shame there is a gap in the middle.
Cheers Peter

Thats spooky i was just looking up the Gaol myself to see if the crime was the same date.Joseph Ford was my 3 x great grandad brother he was hanged for stealing a horse,he was born in Coaley and burried in Coaley.will do abit more digging with the others
-
cool look forward to what you may find
-
The strange thing is Joseph Ford who was hanged for stealing a horse had a daughters sarah and hannah and a son henry, but there baptism dates dont match there ages on the gaol, its a few years out with the daughters.was it only Sarah that got sent to Australia ? have you checked out the information from the gaol index numbers from Gloucestershire records office ? Also dont it give the names of Sarah Ann Ford parents on her marriage certificate ?
-
havent sited there marriage cert, they were given permission to marry ,for they were convicts,,and what dates and ages do you have, yes only sarah was sent as far as i can see, havent checked glouster records, they kept the name henry going, but not joseph
How does one view the records
-
Finding there marriage cert might help alot, normally you have to travel to the records office yourself, but if you live over here in the UK you could somebody on this site to have a look for you if they are going to the records office themselfs.
There are kind people that dont mind looking for you.Just put the names/dates and the Gaol index number in the Gloucestershire lookup requests.hopefully somebody will be kind enough to look for you.
-
they got married in the jail in oz,im in nz,but will keep it in mind for other info, might be two sarah ford in gloustershire goal

Yes i noticed two Sarahs and was hoping that one was Josephs widow, but its not.on my records it shows both Sarahs aged 21,so it could be the same Sarah but had to go to court twice.
-
yep that will be my one then, the age is right, maybe she related to your lot,did joseph have a brother near by
also aussie has just released all its old convict records this year too,so theres a gold mine for info
-
this might be your henry or mine

he drowned
also this
In 1846 Tassie Esk river, Bushrangers Henry Ford and Henry Smart , robbed people at gunpoint in their houses, while robbing Rev Browne's house , Chief Constable Midgely called in to see him and caught the two red handed, got death commuted to life
-
Yes Joseph had a sisters Jane,Hannah,Rebecka and Ann,his brothers was Benjamin (my 3x grt grandad) and John, they was all born in Coaley which is not far from Dursley.the Ford family was big in Coaley and Uley for over hundred years,i have spoke to a few people who are related through my Ford family from Coaley, and i have spoke to people with Ford family from Coaley working with my Ford family but not have found out how they are related, theres lots of gaps in the records. As soon as we can find your Sarah parents we can go back futher,i have some Gloucestershire records on cd.
If you can find the aussie marriage records that might give you her parents.i see she named her first daughter Elizabeth, might be a clue,in those days the first kids got there parents / granparents names.
-
those first two children could be from her first marriage, might have been twins, and one died at birth at least theres a baptism record in england, will solider on,

She was baptised on 31st may 1818 st james the great,Dursley
-
was her birthday 8th jan
i got in touch with tasi, but no joy on there 1818 AO,only she listed her age as 21 in 1837
maybe she lied about her age for what ever reasons, i will find this puzzle one day
-
Not sure i only have her baptism,i noticed Hannah and Henry had wrong ages as well, prehaps they lied to get sent to Australia, must of been better to be looked after in prison then on the streets.hopefully we will sort it one day, keep digging.
