I have one Ceres Gourlay family in my tree, that of John Gorlay and Margaret Forret/Forat, m 1718, Ceres.
Can't help much with the Gourlay families at this stage but I can with the Forret's if anyone is interested.

Hi,
I'm new and am trying to get in touch with Langtonian, who posted a message on 26 Feb, 2008 re GOURLAY & FORRET.
This couple is my 6 x times great grandparents. Their daughter Elspeth married Andrew SPEARS/SPEIRS in 1747. I don't have any other information about the FORRET's, but do have the line back to my SCOTT's of Ceres & Craigrothie.

Since Langtonian has had no interest shown in this Gourlay line on the Gourlay thread it was posted to, I have now split Langtonian's post from that thread and added your post to it.

Delighted that someone else has an interest in the Fife Forret families, I haven't come across many people at all researching these families.
I'm not decended from your Margaret Forat/Forret, c 7 April 1691, Ceres but from her brother Robert who married Janet Anderson, m 26 Feb 1719, Ceres. Their parent were Andrew Forret and Margaret Dutch/Duche who married April 1671, Ceres. Andew's parents were James Forret and Isobell Goodlad/Goodlad who married Apr 1627, Ceres.
The Forret families are extremely interesting and include Sir John Forret who was invloved in the ill-fated colonisation of the Isle of Lewis in 1598. Google the "Fife Adventurers" and you'll come across lots on this story. John Forret, probably the father of the Fife Adventurer was a member of the Scottish Parliament despite being able to neither read nor write. He als owned the Isle of May in the Forth for a few years around 1558.
Thomas Forret, Monk and Vicar of Dollar, is reputed to be a Fife Forret. He was burned at the stake on Castehill, Edinburgh in 1540. Google "Thomas Forret" or "Vicar of Dollar" and you'll come across some info. on this story.
The Goodlad families are no less ionteresting and include our asncestor David Goodlad who served on the jury of one of the early witchcraft trials in Scotland in 1588.

Great to hear from you and thanks to Bob & Kris & others for helping us get in touch.
My connection to the Gourlay's and Forret was a very recent confirmation of parents. So I haven't done any research about them at all.
Look forward to hearing from you by PM, I understand I can't as yet send you my contact details.
I haven't as yet done a Google search as you suggested but will when I get some spare time.
I'm happy to share with you what I have about Elspeth, marriage and children.

I've had a quick look at the link that you sent. The only thing that I have is that my FORRET are in Fife in 1718. But they had to have come from somewhere.

I know it's been a LONG time this was posted but yes, I'd like some information on the FORRETs of Ceres, Fife. I know that an Andrew, William, James and Helen Forret were all living (and getting married) there circa 1664-1671. Trying to tie this family branch to an earlier one in St. Andrew's.
