Title: Gent family, Golden Valley
Post by: Stuart P on Sunday 14 September 08 21:20 BST (UK)
I have a gt-grandmother Ann Gent, wife of Alexander Searson Stevenson. She was born c1859 in Golden Valley, Dby, which seems to fit with a birth of Anna Gent to Edward & Eliza Gent. I know from family sources that there is some connection with John Gent who made billiard tables in Nottingham at the turn of the century - a Google search for this John Gent also has him as a Licensed Victualler who died 4th Nov 1924.
From censuses:
1881
Edward (44)and Eliza (43) Gent in Pentrich, Dby with son John, 19 a miner and daur Eliza 17, Martha Ann 4 and Isaac 1 all b Golden Valley except the mother bca1837 Shipley Gate.
Alec Stevenson miner & wife Anne at Hempshill Lane Bulwell, Notts both age 21 born "Codner"
1891 (from Freecen)
John Gent age 29 b Golden Valley a beerhouse keeper, with wife Eliza age 29 b Heanor, Dby living in Heanor.
Can anyone help me out with the Gent family (or indeed the Stevensons)? Did the beerhouse keeper go on to make billiard tables? What were the spouses maiden names?
Thanks
Stuart in Aberdeen

1861 census:

RG9/2432; Folio 76; Page 12

Golden Valley, Codor Park, Derbyshire

William GENT - Head - 30 - Labourer

The daughter of Edward and Eliza GENT is listed as Hannah on the 1861 and 1871 censuses, and there are birth registrations for an Ann and a Hannah GENT in the same registration district in 1859.

The marriage cert will confirm Ann's father's name:

Hi I have just seen your post whilst searching for relatives online. I typed in Eliza Gent on Google and found your question. The Billiard Table Manfacturer was John Gent born 1862 married Eliza Ann (don't know her maiden name). His sister also Eliza was my Great Grandma.
Their parents (my great great grandparents) were John Gent born 1828 in Golden Valley  (died 1904)& Elizabeth Johnson born 1826 in Tipton Staffordshire (died 1902). I have a photo of them. They married in 1851 in Selston Notts.
The parents of John were John again born 1796 died 1859 in South Normanton Derbyshire and Sarah Smith 1796-1875 born Barlborough .
I have a Gent family tree from 1690 - Thomas Gent born in South Normanton.

Since my original post I have worked out a family tree that goes back to a Thomas Gent born 1744 in South Normanton. My gt-grandmother Ann Gent was daughter of Edward Gent & Eliza Shipley - Edward being the brother of your John Gent (1828-1904). I will get in touch off-board so we can compare notes.

Hi,

I have recently noticed your post about John Gent. John Gent is the brother of my great great grandfather (paternal).

Please let me know if you need any information about the Gent family as I have quite a lot about different members of my family.

Hello,

I see from your post that you have information and photos relating to John Gent the Billiard Table Manufacturer from Nottingham. He is my great great grand uncle on my father's side of the family. I would be extremely grateful of any copies of information and photos you have. I have been researching my family for some time now and am slowly piecing bits together.

Kind regards

Rachel

Hi

I have some copy wills, but sadly my Hannah Gent had passed away before the advent of photographs for the masses.  I'm away from home at the moment, but will PM you when I get back.

Look forward to being in touch
