Can anyone tell me how I can find out what kind of premises were at a certain address in Edinburgh after 1850

Hi Pancho
As a start, you could try doing an address search on the census indexes to see what comes up.

If you could give the address in which you are interested and the year or range of years, I will look it up for you in the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory.

The Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory is a book. Apart from a few years in the early days there was a directory published every year from 1773 to 1975 - some of the early one are not called 'Post Office' directories. A complete set is held in the public library in Edinburgh - in the Edinburgh Room which is the local studies library. Nowadays access is normally via microfilm rather than to the books themselves. I have some directories that have been published in CD and if anyone wants a look-up I would be happy to help. If its not for a year for which I have a CD, it would have to wait for my next visit to the Edinburgh Room. I should warn that not everyone is listed in the directories and in the poorer areas its mostly shops and other businesses that are listed. Still its always worthwhile to check and could tell you what sort of area your ancestor lived in.
