Hi
I am looking for information regarding Florence Whitney. She was born in Walsall, Staffordshire in the Dec Q 1875, but married a shoemaker from Leicestershire.
As her brother and his family where living in Knighton, Leicester on the 1901 census I assume this marriage took place in the Leicester area. I live in Wolverhampton so visiting the Leicester records is difficult as I don't drive.
Can any one help??
With Thanks in advance

Hi Chris - is it the marriage and the 1901 census for her that you want ?
:)

Hi
I have now found her on the 1901 census, also in Knighton with her mother. I presume they moved after her father died, probably to be near her brother William Henry Whitney a cycle manufacturer.
So it is just the marriage I am looking for.
Thanks
Chris

Interesting that there are 2 Florence Whitneys in Knighton in 1901 - almost of an age - it may compound the marriage search of course ::)
Presumably you have searched FreeBMD ?
Added - one is Florence G. - a servant in 1901. This is most likely her marriage ...
Marriages Dec 1908
WHITNEY Florence Gertrude Basford v7b p434
Does your lass have a middle name to help the search ?
I see she was registered as just 'Florence' in the Walsall index entry ....

are you aware of any childrens names ?

Florence has no middle name as far as I am aware, I mean to check her christening next time I go to Walsall History Centre, information regarding her comes from her grandnephew Graham who now lives in Australia, I am related to him and have been looking up various bits of information for him.
The information that she married a shoe factory owner in Leicester probably came from his mother, Florence's niece.
Florence was not the servant on the 1901 census as on that census she was living with her mother Harriet at 15 Howard Road, Knighton, Leicester. No occupation is given for either of them. Presumably they had money to live on.

There's a marriage in Q1 1927 to a Lawrence Walters.
Do you think this might be too late? (She would have been in her 50's).
When did her Mother die? She might have been looking after her.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for that, I think it would be a little late, but not impossible.
Her mother Harriet died in the March Q of 1907 in Leicester. What I really need is access to the parish records in Knighton, I believe the local church is St Mary Magdalene, so if anyone was able to look it up on a visit to the record office I would be very grateful.

I know - I highlighted the fact that there were 2 Florences, and then showed a likely marriage for the servant girl with middle initial G to eliminate her from the search.
I asked about children, cos from 1912, mothers maiden names are shown in the Birth Index. If we found one in the overall area, we could then back track looking for a xxxx / Whitney marriage
If she married, there will be a GRO Index entry. Should be easier than Parish records - of course she may have left the area to marry - and the name is not uncommon it seems ......
