Hi
I am looking for a child HARRY SPARROW BENCE ROE who was born in Lowestoft in 1847. His unmarried mother died in 1850 and I can't find what happened to Harry until he turned up in Liverpool marrying a German girl called Frederika Geyer in 1870.
Can anyone check the Suffolk census for any sign of Harry.
Thanks
Sue

Will wait to c if young Harry turns up in 1851 Suffolk b4 I start trawling Lowestoft in 1861....Too big to trawl without being pretty sure he is there....No index for 1861 census so do need to know just where to look.....Kris ;)

Thanks for doing the lookup so quick. You weren't dreaming! I had put the message on the Norfolk and Suffolk boards as I wasn't sure where the family were.
I had a reply for the Norfolk topic so changed the Suffolk one to save anyone else having to do the lookup. But you had beaten me to it.
I keep hoping that young Harry turns on the 1851 index but no luck so far. But the name may be spelt incorrectly. Or he was under the Sparrow or Bence name. I don't know that it really matters where he was but I would just love to try and work out how he ended up in Liverpool married to a German girl.
Just part of the fun of family history!
Thanks again

LOL I Knew it was there I kept scrolling back and forth as I was typing it up comparing names and places of birth ..ages etc...then I posted and it was a totally diff message...Sat here scratching my head and thinking what happened here This is not the message I answered...Am I goin bonkers or what...LOL....Not to worry...Heres hoping young Harry turns up in the 51 index for Suffolk....As U say he gets around To end up married in Liverpool so really he could be anywhere I guess...As u say it would be nice to find who brought him up.....I have just solved a similar problem in my family ...mother died in childbirth but fortunately I had a good idea where to look and now am very pleased to finally know who brought her up......All The Best...If I c he is found in 51 Suffolk I will have a go at 61 for u Providing of course it is a small enough parish to trawl...Good Luck....Kris :D

Hi Sue
I'm doing a spot of housekeeping and I wondered if you have managed to find Harry in 51 and 61?

Hi
I have found Harry in Shropshire in 1861 with his aunts but there is no sign of him in 1851. I have found all his mother's siblings (I think) and he is not living with any of them. I was hoping to find him living with his father (his mother never married) but no such luck.
He must have been around somewhere and I was just hoping for some confirmation of his father, as none was named on his birth certificate.
I just think I will have to give up on 1851.
Thanks

Hello Sue
As I like a read...........you never mentioned who his mother was? or where she came from? and how old was she when she died in 1850?

Hello Bryant
Harry's mother was Harriet Elizabeth Roe and was christened in Lowestoft on 31/12/1819. She never married.
I have found her on the 1841 census living with her family. And found the family and various of her siblings in 1851. But no sign of Harry in 1851. I found him living with his aunt in Shropshire in 1861 and then married in Liverpool in 1871.
Just one of these family challanges that I keep digging at and I hoping that I get some proof about my theory about his father.
Regards
Sue

Thankyou Sue
Have you thought about looking for a HENRY ROE in 1851 instead of Harry, it would have been rare for someone in the middle of the 19th century to be christianed Harry..........they might have been called Harry throughout their life but christianed Harry?.......real name Henry.......my father was one!
And even if he was christianed Harry? the enumerator when transposing might have automatically changed it to Henry (as all Harry's were Henry's).....if you get my drift.
