Post by: ianhb on Thursday 11 September 08 15:43 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace a  Mary A Bacon Born 1853 in Brentwood, Essex and who went on to marry John Johnson from Biddeswell Leics b 1862. Is she on the 1861/71/81  census returns? Thanks Ian

Not doing very well here.
The only contender I can find in 1871 has an age way out too!

What name and occupation does it give for her dad on the marriage cert to Mr Johnson?

1871
RG10 1656 57 5

Ongar Rd, Brentwood

William Bacon 50 retired grocer bn Brentwood
Sarah wife 45 bn South Weald
Mary A 24 bn Brentwood

Ther is no sign of this Mary A Bacon in 1891, so it is highly likely that she then appears at RG12 2526 27 5 as 40 year old Mrs Johnson in Leicester

If you want details of this census entry just ask, but I guess you have it

And by 1901 she has lost another couple of years! age 48 (RG13 2989 23 38)
Will be because husband is quite a lot younger than her!

So, if this is her (and I think it must be as there are no others around) (but marriage cert will confirm) then we can go back to 1851:

HO107 1774 149 26
High Street South Weald
William 32 Grocer and Draper bn Brentwood
Sarah 27 wife bn South Weald
MAry Ann 4  bn B'wood
Sarah 1  "

(My mind is boggling at the idea of South Weald having a "High Street" ! It is a tiny village, very nice. Info about it on here: http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexs14.html, but I cant see William BAcon listed in 1848)

Birth:

Jan/eb/Mar 1847
MAry Ann Bacon
Billericaly reg district (covers Brentwood)
ref 12 4

MArriage
Oct/Nov/Dec 1845
William Bacon
Billericay reg distr
ref 12 29
brides on page include Sarah Saggers and Sarah Pain - will need to get cert to see which is MAry's mum!
Or alternativley, her birth cert will give mothers maiden name - also where she was born, as they were in Brentwood then, not South Weald it seems.

1841

HO107 324 8

High Street South Weald
Benjamin Bacon 51 Grocer
MAry 61
William 22

I wonder if William moved into Brentwood  on his marriage then came back to take over his fathers shop on his fathers death or retirement, or something.

This is now getting more complex, as there are obviously 2 Benjamin Bakers from South Weald of similar ages.

At least one is still going strong in 1851 (HO107 1770 488 5) in Harlow
62 yr old Benjamin Bacon bn Weald Essex
BUT this one is an Ag LAb with a14 yr old son bn Harlow with him
So does not look like the one who is William's dad.

cancel all that - senior moment
my mind went on to Baker instead of Bacon! (the other bit of a bacon butty)

The right Benjamin Baker is enjoying a prosperous retirement locally ....

HO107 1774 137 Ongar Road South Weald
Benjamin Bacon 61 propietor of houses bn Brentwood
Mary 71 wife bn Shenfield
Louisa Downey servant
