Title: Street Name in Old Colwyn
Post by: GreyBear on Thursday 11 September 08 14:25 BST (UK)
I have a street address from a 1946 newspaper that says an ancestor lived in Creniew Terrace, Old Colwyn (possibly Cernlew?) but I can't find in on any maps.  Is the address an error, has the street name been changed or does the street no longer exist?  Anyone know??

Hi there,

The name is probably Cerniew, which is the Anglicised version of Cernyw. It translates to Cornwall. If you haven't had a proper reply I should be able to help you out next Monday or Tuesday, if I remember, when I'm back in work and I can check if it still exists.
 :)

P.S. Welcome to R.C.

Thank you so much for the information.  If you could find if the street still exists I'd appreciate it.  I'm researching the family of my son-in-law's mother.  She came to the USA in 1952 at the age of 4 years and has no recollection of Wales.  My son-in-law would like to give her a "family tree" for Mother's Day next year and asked me to help.

The newspaper article says that his great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Owen) Thomas (a widow), lived at "2 Cerniew Terrace, Old Colwyn".  Her youngest daughter, Margaret, had married an American GI, Joseph Pepe, and arrived at her new home in Utica, New York, USA in 1946.  If I could find the location on Google Earth, it would be nice to include a picture with the research.

Creniew Terrace will probably be just a row of [joined up] houses on a much bigger road and so will not show up on any map. This will certainly be the case for blocks of terraced houses that are on the main road (Abergele Road). There are lots of old terrace blocks in Old Colwyn.

I'll ask my postman when I see him - he lives in Old Colwyn.

Lee.

I dont know if this helps, but on the 1901 census, there is a Llys Gerniew in Princess Road, Old Colwyn. There are still  rows of terraced houses on both sides of the road - just off the main Abergele Road.

(I believe Llys translates as court, but I stand to be corrected - I am only an English incomer to Wales!)

I've checked what I can and I cannot locate a Cerniew or Cernyw Terrace in Old Colwyn. I'll check LLys Gernyw, probably Tuesday now.

Jan is correct with her translation of Llys.

Good luck with your research.

Hi there again,

No, Llys Gerniew/Gernyw does not appear to exist now.
Good luck with the research.

Hi, I just saw your post about Cerniew Terrace.  I am quite certain it still exists, and my parents were there in the 1970s.  My grandfather, William Samual Owen was born at 4 Cerniew, and he moved to Uitca, NY in 1923.  You mention Peggy Thomas, who married Joe Pepe.  Peggy still lives in Utica.  I have extensive research on the Owens from Old Colwyn, and could possibly help you out.  I might even have a picture of 2 Cerniew.  Let me know if you are interested.

Hi Joe.  I've been researching my son-in-law's mother's family.  She is Wendt T. (Williams) Laufer, the granddaughter of Elizabeth Isabella Owen.  Of course, Elizabeth is the sister of William Samuel Owen, your father.  Incidentally, Maragaret Teresa (Thomas) Pepe died September 5 of last year.  I'd love to talk more about the Owens line and exchange ingo.  Please contact me off line at (*).

I know I am a bit late coming back to this - but I have found that there is a Cerniew(?) Terrace still in Old Colwyn. Talking to someone, they mentioned that there is a terrace of 4 house with the above name (on a brick "plaque" dated 1891) in the Llawr Pentre area of Old Colwyn.
